Town Histories: Harpersfield
The second town meeting held April 7th, 1789, at the same place, elected besides persons within the present limits of the town, Moses Clark of Hampden, and Robert Freeman, Walton, Constables; Alex Smith, Johorakim Burgett, and Gabriel North, Assessors; Robert Freeman, Sibbles Bennett, Collectors; Jacob Houghtail, Henry Burgett, Dan'l Parker, Nathaniel Wattles, John Ogden, Witter Johnson, Michael Goodrich, Joshua Pine, David Harrow, Path Masters. May 26th of the same year was the first election of commissioners of highways; previously they had either been appointed by courts of Special Sessions or commissioned by the Governor. Such a commission issued to Hon. Roswell Hotchkiss is still in existence. The commissioners elected were Samuel Wilcox, Jared Goodrich and Nathaniel Wattles. Also at the same time, Abel Kidder of Franklin, Kenoth Chisholm of Painesdale, Andrew Kiff of Goalsborough, and George Wiseamore of Whitesborough, were elected Pathmasters.

Jehoiakim and his younger brother, Henrich Burghardt, were listed as Heads of Households in the above census records as residing in the town of Kortright, which was included in Montgomery Co. for the 1790 census but was in Delaware Co. for the 1800 census. Delaware Co. was formed from Montgomery Co. between 1790 and 1800. By 1810, many BURGETT individuals had migrated Westward to nearby Smithville, Chenango Co., NY.
His youngest son, Jehoiakim, Jr., was the first of four of his children [Judith, who m. Josiah Dodge; William, Sr.; Milberry; and Jehoiakim, Jr.] to migrate from around German and Smithville, Chenango Co., NY to Harpersfield, Ashtabula Co., OH during the period 1813-1819. Both Jehoiakim, Jr. and his paternal cousin, Hannah [Dodge] Brainard, a daughter of Judith, were among the earliest settlers of Harpersfield, which was named after Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY from whence they came. The other siblings had followed by 1819. Jehoiakim, Sr. probably died in Chenango Co., NY; however his wife, Sarah White, probably migrated to Harpersfield, Ashtabula Co. with her children.
COMPILER'S COMMENTS:
The Town of Davenport was formed from the Town of Kortright in 1817. It is likely that this same area was included in that area which had been transferred previously from the Town of Harpersfield to form the Town of Kortright in 1793; therefore Hendrick and Jehoiakim probably lived in what is now Davenport during the Census of 1790 and 1800 [see above].
Some individuals of BURGETT family and some of their descendants remained in the Delaware Co., NY area after other BURGETT families had subsequently migrated on to Chenango Co. I am currently researching around the Town of Davenport and vicinity for BURGETT individuals and such allied families as BANNER and SMITH.
According to the History of the Town of Davenport; both John BANNER, who m. Priscilla Burgett a daughter of Hendrick and Lydia Burgett, and Conrad BURGETT, a known child of Hendrick and Lydia, were chosen as officials of the Town of Davenport at its first town meeting in 1817. Catherine Burgett, another probable child of Hendrick and Lydia, m. A. Hermance Smith in Davenport.
