Obituary Reads
The death occurred in the Guelph Hospital early Saturday morning, 4th of September of
Mr. Samual Burwash, an old and highly esteemed resident of Port Elgin in his 78th year.
Mr. Burwash who had been a long and patient sufferer from bladder trouble, underwent an
operation in the Guelph hospital on July 24thand was progressing so favorably that
preparations were being made for his removal to his home here, when he took a bad turn
with his kidneys,on Aug. 26th, and though Alling for a few days, gradually sank until called bythe angel of death the following Saturday.
Born in East Hawkesbury, deceased came to Bruce County with his parents, the late
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Burwash, when nine years of age, and settled on the 4th con. of BruceTwp., which at that time was a dense bush, not a tree having been felled on the concession.Developing into manhood and having experienced the hardships of pioneer days, assisting
his parents in clearing the land and putting it into tillable shape, he meet and married Miss
Eliza Jane Glass of the boundary Kincardine and Bruce and continued on the old homestead
with his parents where he remained after their death until 16 years ago when he disposed of
the farm to Mr. Robert Alexander and moved to Port Elgin, taking up residence on Gustavis
Street in the house now occupied by Mr. Salmon where he se sided until about three years ago
when with his wife he moved to the house of his son, John, near Lakeview Park, and where he
lived up to the time of his death.
Mr. Burwash was a Liberal in politics and a Methodist in religion, he having for overthirty years held the office of recording Steward and otherwise taking an active part in the
affairs of the church.He was also a very staunch worker in the Temperance cause.
Deceased leaves, besides his wife, a family of four daughters and two sons as following
(Cecilia Jane) Mrs. John Mckenzie of Saskatchewan, (Eliza Ann) Mrs. Wm. Whenham of Los
Angeles, CAlifornia, (Mary W.) Mrs. J. B. Smith of Saugeen, (Myrtle B.) Mrs. Roy Upshall of
Saugeen, John H. at home and Samual of Saskatchewan.
Mrs. Burwash will make her home for now with her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Smith ofSaugeen.The remains were brought to Port Elgin on Saturday afternoon and the funeral took
place to the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon where service was conducted by Rev.
Mr. Barbaree, the edifice being crowded with friends from the town and vacinity to pay their
last respects to allthat was mortal of him that they had so honoredin life.
Interment was made in the Port Elgin Cemetery.
