I'm searching for not only my family, but my husbands family as well. From what I have learned my ancestors were of varied descent - Irish, Scottish, English, Germany and some American Indian. They came from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, and North Carolina. My husband's family has been harder to trace. As African Americans they at one time were slaves to a prominent Choctaw Indian family of the name Pitchlynn.I sympathize with African Americans who are doing genealogy research and can't find records.I have found many of their names in the 1896 Choctaw Nation Census, Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma). This census stated whether they had been slaves or not.I also have records from the OK Historical Society - their Freedmens Papers. These records stated who had been their "owners".I'm hoping one of the Pitchlynn family members may have some records that can help me.The following is a list of my family surnames: Brown, Martin, Linker, Beck, Johnston, Couch, Vick, and Stout. The following is a list of my husband's family surnames: Burris, Lewis, McDaniel, Hill, Walker, Pitchlynn, and Colbert. Please contact me via e-mail if we might have a connection. Happy hunting to everyone! | The Vanessa Brown Burris Family Home Page Updated September 6, 2000 |
