Notes for S
AMUEL LOVELACE, SR.:
1741 - Records show a John Lovelace, Luke, Lovelace and a Samuel Lovelace as lessees of some farm land from his Majesties Governor in Maryland.

1780 - Virginia Tax rolls show a Samuel Lovelace and Samuel Lovelace, Jr.

1804 - Samuel Lovelace appears on the delinquent tax roll for Pendleton Co., Kentucky. It says he has removed to Harrison Co., Kentucky.

1805 - Samuel Lovelace appears on the deliquent tax roll for Pendleton Co., Kentucky. It does not give a removal destination.

Citation: Delinquent tax lists for Pendleton Co., Kentucky for the tax years 1799 thru 1813, Court Order Book B. The year given is the year the delinquency was recorded by the court. In most cases the taxes were for the previous year.

1812 August 22-28 - A Samuel Loveless served in the Military from Ohio in Capt. Daniel Dull's company under Lt. Robert Earl and again January 1st to March 8th in 1813. This Samuel Loveless is buried in cemetary in Trumbull County, Ohio. Stone shows the birth & death. NOT PROVEN THAT THIS IS THE SAME SAMUEL LOVELACE THAT MARRIED ELIZABETH "BETSY" KIDWELL. \

1820 Census of Pendleton Co., Kentucky lists a Loveless.

1830 Census of Pendleton Co., Kentucky lists a Loveless. It is believed that Samuel Lovelace was in Kentucky 1820,1830 & 1840 but not in 1850 or 1860.

1840 Census of Pendleton Co., Kentucky lists a Hazel Lovelace.

Samuel Lovelace/Loveless appears on the U. S. Census for Kentucky, Campbell Co., in the years 1820 (pg. 18, line 31) and 1830 (pg. 254, line 17). In 1840, Samuel appears on the 1840 U. S. Census for Kentucky. Pendleton Co. (page 228, line 25). I have not found him after that. In 1820, Samuel's age is given as over 44, born before 1776. In 1830, Samuel's age is given as 50 to 59 years, born 1771-1780. In 1840, Samuel's age is given as 60 to 69 years, born 1771to 1780. Samuel's composite birthdate is in the range 1774-1775.

During this same time period, there are at least three Samuel Lovelesses appearing in Trumbull Co., Ohio, who are occasionally confused with the Samuel Lovelace from Campbell and Pendleton Counties, Kentucky.

1820 - In Trumbull Co., Ohio, there is a Lovelass, George (pg. 282) and a Lovelass, John (pg. 267) listed as head of household. John is in Newton Township.

1850 Census lists a Samuel Loveless age 57 in Trumbull County, Ohio. An Elizabeth Lovelace was listed in Kentucky 1850 Census as born in Maryland in 1798 and head of household.

1855 - Richard Mullins sued the heirs of Samuel Lovelace for a deed to 34 acres of land on the Little Fork of Grassy Creek and a hewed log house not on this property which Samuel had sold to him for $140 cash in hand with possession to be on following March 1st. The contract of sale was dated June 18, 1846, and was witnessed by A.R.F. McCormick, heirs named in this suit were: Samuel, Jr., James, Patsy, (married W. Abercrombie), Nancy, Thomas, Zachariah, Milton, Washington, John (deceased heirs unknown), and Daniel (deceased, and his children).

1860 Census also lists a Samuel Loveless in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Children of ELIZABETH KIDWELL and S
AMUEL LOVELACE are:
10. i.   JAMES JEFFERSON3 LOVELACE, b. November 25, 1816, VA. (PART NOW W.VA.); d. July 22, 1895, TURNER RIDGE CEM., PENDLETON CO., KY..
  ii.   SAMUEL H. LOVELACE.
  iii.   GEORGE ANN LOVELACE.
  iv.   GEORGE WASHINGTON LOVELACE, b. November 20, 1814, Probably Harrison Co., Kentucky10; d. July 16, 1862, Rutledge, McDonald Co., Missouri11; m. LUCINDA LOVELACE, February 12, 1839, Pendleton Co., Kentucky12.
  Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON LOVELACE:
After failing to find George W. Lovelace on any census for Kentucky for the year 1840, finally found him in Madison Co., Ohio. At least there is a G. W. Loveless listed which had in the household a male, 20-30 years, who could be George W., has a female, 20-30 years, who could be Lucinda, and has a female, under 5 years, who could be Sarah. The only problem is that the household has six other people living in it who have not been identified. These are: a male, 15-20 years of age, two males, 10-15 years of age, a female 40-50 years of age, a female, 15-20 years of age, and a female, 5-10 years of age.

Found a Washington Lovelace on the tax book of Campbell County, Kentucky in the year 1847. In 1848, there is a G. W. Lovelace.

The 1850 Census for Iowa, Jefferson County, Liberty Township (page 165 (83), family 397) says that George"s middle initial is "W" and that he was born in Kentucky. The transcript of the family bible says his name is George M. Lovelace. Assume it is the correct George becaus his wife's name is Lucinda and Sarah A., Jasper, James J., and George T. are present in both the census and the transcript of the family bible and the pages are all in agreement.

The 1860 Census of Missouri, McDonald County, Rutledge Township (page 15, dwelling 100, line 19) also says that George's middle initial is "W" and that he was born in Kentucky. Assume it is the correct George because his wife's name is Lucinda and Jasper N. James J., George T., W. K. and Mary A.J. are present in both the census and the transcript of the family bible and the ages are all correct. Also, the 1860 Census lists George's occupation as a carpenter, which seems to be a family occupation.

The only problem with the match is that both census records use the name "Loveless" . This is probably an error on the part of the census takers. The only marriage record I have been able to find (which also uses a "W" as the middle initial) for George W. spells both his name and Lucinda's name as "Lovelace".

On the 1860 U.S. Census for Missouri, County of McDonald, all of the children born prior to George T. are listed as being born in Kentucky, the same as on the 1850 Census of Iowa, County of Jefferson. However, since George W. and Lucinda were in Ohio until 1847, Sarah, Jasper, and Savannah were probably born in Madison County, Ohio. Savannah is probably buried there. James is probably the only child of George W. and Lucinda who was actually born in Kentucky, since they seem to be living in Campbell County, Kentucky when he was born.

The Iowa Census gives George T's place of birth as being Kentucky. The Missouri census gives George T's place of birth as being Iowa. The last time I have found George W. on the tax books for Campbell County, Kentucky is in 1848, so the family probably moved to Jefferson County, Iowa in 1848 or 1849. Since George T. was born in 1850, he was born in Iowa.

We know from the 1860 Census of Missouri, County of McDonald, that all of the children after George T. were born in Iowa. But where in Iowa? The family was in Jefferson County of 28 Oct. 1850, because they were counted in the census. Iowa conducted a state census in Jefferson County in 1855. The family does not appear on that census, so they had left the county by then. On both the 1850 Iowa census and the 1860 Missouri census, George W. is shown as not owning any real estate. This tells us that they either rented or they lived with others. Since the 1850 census and the 1860 census show them living alone, we can assume that they rented after they left Kentucky. Did George W. constantly move the family around looking for work? What kind of work would he have been looking for? Since they were building a lot of railroads about that time, did George W. work for a railroad and that is why they moved around so much?

All of George W. and Lucinda's living children, including Sarah A. and her son, were living in Lamar Co., Texas when the 1870 census was conducted.

Marriage Notes for GEORGE LOVELACE and LUCINDA LOVELACE:
From Pendleton County, Kentucky: Marriage Record, Volume 1, page277, File Box #7, Document #105.
"Know all men by these present that we, G. W. Lovelace and Samal? Thomas? Hauser are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Kentucky on the penal sum of fifty pounds good and lawful money for the payment of which we and each of us bind ourselves our and each of us our heirs Exors? & Adms? jointly severally & firmly by these present. Sealed with our scales and dated this 12th day of Febry. 1839.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Lovelace and Lucinda Lovelace. Now if there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct said intended marriage and no damage shall arise by reason of issuing a license necessary therefore, then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue.   Notes for MARTHA "PATSY" LOVELACE:
I do not "know" that Martha and George W. Lovelace are twins. The only birthdate I know for Martha is 1814. From the family bible, I know that George W. was born 20 November 1814. If George W. and Martha are not twins, then Martha is the older and she was born in January or February of 1814. [Jack D.   Notes for GEORGE W. ABERCROMBIE:
Ancestral file give George Abercrombie's birthdate as 1818, Scotland. David Wilma found query that had him born at Morning View, Campbell Co., Ky. William Abercrombie & Nancy sold land in New Richmond, Clermont Co., Ohio in 1811. I think he was born there. Mel Karsten

  Notes for MILTON LOVELACE:
A book, apparently carried during the Civil War by Milton Lovelace, was found down in Louisiana or Arkansas by a lady named Aletha Summerhill Rogers, a lover and collector of ephemera (old papers and books). She picked it up in an auction. The name of it was, "Six Sermons on the Nature, Occasions, Signs, Evils, and Remedy of Intemperance", by Lyman Beecher, D.D., Published by the American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-Street, New York - Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1827. Milton wrote his name and unit designation on the inside back cover and opposite page of the book in pencil. The writing is exceedingly dim but can still be discerned if you look intensely. It is displayed on an Internet website maintained by Mrs. Rogers >LeteRogers@aol.com<.
