Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON LOVELACE: After failing to find George W. Lovelace on any census for Kentucky for the year 1840, finally found him in Madison Co., Ohio. At least there is a G. W. Loveless listed which had in the household a male, 20-30 years, who could be George W., has a female, 20-30 years, who could be Lucinda, and has a female, under 5 years, who could be Sarah. The only problem is that the household has six other people living in it who have not been identified. These are: a male, 15-20 years of age, two males, 10-15 years of age, a female 40-50 years of age, a female, 15-20 years of age, and a female, 5-10 years of age. Found a Washington Lovelace on the tax book of Campbell County, Kentucky in the year 1847. In 1848, there is a G. W. Lovelace. The 1850 Census for Iowa, Jefferson County, Liberty Township (page 165 (83), family 397) says that George"s middle initial is "W" and that he was born in Kentucky. The transcript of the family bible says his name is George M. Lovelace. Assume it is the correct George becaus his wife's name is Lucinda and Sarah A., Jasper, James J., and George T. are present in both the census and the transcript of the family bible and the pages are all in agreement. The 1860 Census of Missouri, McDonald County, Rutledge Township (page 15, dwelling 100, line 19) also says that George's middle initial is "W" and that he was born in Kentucky. Assume it is the correct George because his wife's name is Lucinda and Jasper N. James J., George T., W. K. and Mary A.J. are present in both the census and the transcript of the family bible and the ages are all correct. Also, the 1860 Census lists George's occupation as a carpenter, which seems to be a family occupation. The only problem with the match is that both census records use the name "Loveless" . This is probably an error on the part of the census takers. The only marriage record I have been able to find (which also uses a "W" as the middle initial) for George W. spells both his name and Lucinda's name as "Lovelace". On the 1860 U.S. Census for Missouri, County of McDonald, all of the children born prior to George T. are listed as being born in Kentucky, the same as on the 1850 Census of Iowa, County of Jefferson. However, since George W. and Lucinda were in Ohio until 1847, Sarah, Jasper, and Savannah were probably born in Madison County, Ohio. Savannah is probably buried there. James is probably the only child of George W. and Lucinda who was actually born in Kentucky, since they seem to be living in Campbell County, Kentucky when he was born. The Iowa Census gives George T's place of birth as being Kentucky. The Missouri census gives George T's place of birth as being Iowa. The last time I have found George W. on the tax books for Campbell County, Kentucky is in 1848, so the family probably moved to Jefferson County, Iowa in 1848 or 1849. Since George T. was born in 1850, he was born in Iowa. We know from the 1860 Census of Missouri, County of McDonald, that all of the children after George T. were born in Iowa. But where in Iowa? The family was in Jefferson County of 28 Oct. 1850, because they were counted in the census. Iowa conducted a state census in Jefferson County in 1855. The family does not appear on that census, so they had left the county by then. On both the 1850 Iowa census and the 1860 Missouri census, George W. is shown as not owning any real estate. This tells us that they either rented or they lived with others. Since the 1850 census and the 1860 census show them living alone, we can assume that they rented after they left Kentucky. Did George W. constantly move the family around looking for work? What kind of work would he have been looking for? Since they were building a lot of railroads about that time, did George W. work for a railroad and that is why they moved around so much? All of George W. and Lucinda's living children, including Sarah A. and her son, were living in Lamar Co., Texas when the 1870 census was conducted. NOTES TAKEN FROM JACK D. Notes for MARTHA "PATSY" LOVELACE: I do not "know" that Martha and George W. Lovelace are twins. The only birthdate I know for Martha is 1814. From the family bible, I know that George W. was born 20 November 1814. If George W. and Martha are not twins, then Martha is the older and she was born in January or February of 1814. [Jack D. Notes for GEORGE W. ABERCROMBIE: Ancestral file give George Abercrombie's birthdate as 1818, Scotland. David Wilma found query that had him born at Morning View, Campbell Co., Ky. William Abercrombie & Nancy sold land in New Richmond, Clermont Co., Ohio in 1811. I think he was born there. Mel Karsten |

Notes for MILTON LOVELACE: A book, apparently carried during the Civil War by Milton Lovelace, was found down in Louisiana or Arkansas by a lady named Aletha Summerhill Rogers, a lover and collector of ephemera (old papers and books). She picked it up in an auction. The name of it was, "Six Sermons on the Nature, Occasions, Signs, Evils, and Remedy of Intemperance", by Lyman Beecher, D.D., Published by the American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-Street, New York - Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1827. Milton wrote his name and unit designation on the inside back cover and opposite page of the book in pencil. The writing is exceedingly dim but can still be discerned if you look intensely. It is displayed on an Internet website maintained by Mrs. Rogers >LeteRogers@aol.com<. |
