      12. John Shouse15, born September 17, 1796 in Woodford Co., KY15; died June 24, 1862 in Clay Co., MO15. He was the son of 24. Henry Shouse and 25. Sally Elizabeth Watts. He married 13. Sarah E. Slaughter May 08, 1819 in Franklin Co., KY15.

      13. Sarah E. Slaughter15, born February 14, 179216,17; died September 22, 1875 in Clay Co., MO17. She was the daughter of 26. George Slaughter and 27. ? Cochran.

  Notes for Sarah E. Slaughter:
Parentage of Sarah Slaughter has not been proved but is likely based upon a study of the names of her children, proximity to the places George Slaughter, Jr., lived, and the inability to fit her into the family of Gabriel Slaughter's brother, Charles (as claimed by Thomas R. Shouse, her grandson), or anyone else named "Charles Slaughter" in the areas she lived. For example, she not only named her eldest son "George" [with no sons named Charles she named her second son Willis (named, I believe, after a great-uncle, Willis Field]. A remaining unsolved question is how her eldest daughter, Matilda, has a date of birth preceding Sarah's marriage to John Shouse. Perhaps Sarah was only a Slaughter by marriage, in which case the proposed connection to George Slaughter would be invalid. Another possibility is that she is the Sally Slaughter (daughter of Jesse Slaughter) who married Lewis Slaughter (son of Francis Lightfoot Slaughter). I have not found any information about what happened to Lewis and Sally, where they moved, or where they died. But naming customs would have made it likely that our Sarah would have used at least one of those names (Jesse, Lewis, Francis, Lightfoot), among her children, and she used none of them. But she did use names associated with the family of George Slaughter.\

Children of John Shouse and Sarah Slaughter are:
  i.   Matilda Shouse, born April 03, 1815; died March 1890 in Clay Co., MO; married David Piburn; born December 24, 1817; died July 17, 1897 in Clay Co., MO..
  Notes for Matilda Shouse:
This given name occurs from time to time in both the Field and Slaughter families and does not appear to provide any clue to the identity of Sarah's mother. It does not appear in earlier generations of the Cochran family so far as I can tell. The name of her other daughter, Elizabeth, which is also her own middle name, is a better possibility, but it is just as likely that she did not name one of her daughters after her mother.

ii.   George H. Shouse, born February 10, 1820.
iii.   Willis Shouse, born October 15, 1822 in KY; died January 15, 1844 in Clay Co., MO; married Mary Carroll October 15, 1841 in Clay Co., MO.
iv.   John Watts Shouse, born April 12, 1825; died September 07, 1919 in Clay Co., MO; married Elizabeth Writesman June 01, 1848 in Clay Co., MO.
  Notes for John Watts Shouse:
John served in both the Mexican war (as a private on Doniphan's Expedition) and in the civil war. He was probably in the State Guard at the war's beginning and then served in the confederate army until he was captured in 1863. He escaped from prison at Springfield, Mo., and never returned. After the war he received a presidential pardon.

      15. Louisiana Buster17, born 1814 in Kentucky17. She was the daughter of 30. John Buster and 31. Martha Tate.

  Notes for John E. Cook:
Pension file indicates that he had black hair and black eyes. Since he went to Oklahoma, this may have some relation to the claim of Cherokee Indian blood in the family.
