Ancestors of John Franklin Bush, Sr.

Generation No. 7

      64. John Bush52, born Abt. 1671 in Lancaster County, Virginia52; died February 27, 1745/46 in Orange County, Virginia52. He was the son of 128. Abraham Bush and 129. Ann. He married 65. Margaret Bruce in Lancaster County, Virginia52.

      65. Margaret Bruce53,54, born Abt. 1670 in Lancaster Co., VA55,56; died Bef. 1730 in Spotsylvania Co., VA57,58.

Notes for Margaret Bruce:
The source of the "Bruce" surname is not clear to me. It appears that some persons have decided that Margaret "Bruce" and "Bridget" Braxton are the same person.

More About Margaret Bruce:
King: Others say her surname was Braxton58

Child of John Bush and Margaret Bruce is:
32 i.   Philip Bush, born Abt. 1700 in Lancaster County, Virginia; died September 24, 1772 in Orange County, Virginia; married Mary Bryan.

      66. William Bryan58.

Notes for William Bryan:
Several records refer to him as William Bryant (Briant). He should not be identified with William Bryan of Roanoke Co., Va., until someone documents that they are in fact the same person. I have seen no such documentation. At any rate, it is extremely unlikely that he is a brother of Morgan Bryan, as claimed by Zella Armstrong in Notable Southern Families. He is not the same person as William O'Brien, the second earl of Inchiquin, who served under William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne. See I. Grehan, Irish Family Histories (Boulder 1993), p. 150.

A more interesting question is what relationship there might be between this William Bryan and the person of that name who died in Bedford County, VA, in 1763-1764. His wife's name was Mary, and he had a son named Elijah. John Bush was one of the witnesses on the will. His name is indexed as Bryant, which is consistent with the practice in Orange Co. records. He owned 400 ac. of land in Amherst Co. He apparently left orphans. The John Bush who witnessed his will is probably the person who himself died in Bedford County in 1773-1774, leaving a wife named Martha and children named Margit Jackson, Mary Bush, Francis Bush, Elizabeth Bush, Milley Bush, Phillup Bush, Darkish Bush, Ann Bush, and Susannah Bush.

On the internet at

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/myff/d0029/g0000022.html#I24387

is information that suggests that the William Bryan of Bedford Co. is a son of John Bryan and Elizabeth Hamlet of Fluvanna Co., with brothers of William named Permanus, John, Sylvanus, Richard Hamlet and David Porter Bryan. John's father is said to be Jacques Bryant (Briand, Briant), son of Stephan Briand, Jr. and Sarah Snell, son of Stephan Briand, Sr., son of Thomas Briand, apparently Huguenots. Jacques had another son named Isaac who also had a son named William who died in Cumberland Co., 5-27-1781, but his family is not further described.

Clifton Bush thinks that William Bush was a brother of Morgan Bryan and that his wife's name was Margaret Strode. I think that is unlikely but I have asked for a source on this suggestion.

Child of William Bryan is:
33 i.   Mary Bryan, married Philip Bush.

      68. Edward Walton, Jr.58, born 166858; died 172058. He was the son of 136. Edward Walton. He married 69. Elizabeth Mason?.

      69. Elizabeth Mason?58.

Notes for Edward Walton, Jr.:
From http://hal.lamar.edu/~Walton/AnnLynn.htm

Edward Walton, Jr. was born in York Co., Virginia about 1668. His parents are unknown for sure at this time, whether they were Edward Walton, Sr. and Elizabeth Booth has not been established with proof. Elizabeth is said to be the daughter of Lemuel Mason, Jr. and Mary Thelaball born about 1683 in Virginia. This is also not proven. She died May 15, 1717, in New Kent Co., VA and Edward, her husband, died February 27, 1719/20 in New Kent Co., VA. They married before the 1698, since their first child was born then.

  Notes for Elizabeth Mason?:
Although some internet sources say she is a daughter of Lemuel Mason, Jr., of Lower Norfolk Co., the age seems off, and Adventurers of Purse and Person says that Lemuel Jr.'s daughter married Christopher Todd. I have seen no definitive evidence that the surname of Edward Walton's wife was Mason or that Lemuel Mason, Jr., was her father. Lemuel Jr.'s daughter required the appointment of a guardian when her father died in 1711-1712, which makes it unlikely that she was born as early as 1678. Lemuel, Jr. also had an aunt named Elizabeth, but she married James Thelaball before 1667, before Edward Walton was born. These Masons and Thelaballs appear to have remained in Lower Norfolk Co. and do not appear to have ventured across the bay to York Co. or up the peninsula to New Kent Co. However, there is an Elizabeth Mason, sister of Lemuel Mason, Jr. She married William Major who did live in York Co. Major had died by 1678 and Adventurers of Purse and Person does not list for him a daughter named Elizabeth. The widow Major married Thomas Cocke.

Child of Edward Walton and Elizabeth Mason? is:
34 i.   William Walton, born December 25, 1700 in New Kent Co., VA; died 1747; married Susannah Cobb.

      70. John Cobb58, born 167658. He married 71. Susannah Hughes.

      71. Susannah Hughes58, born 168058.

Child of John Cobb and Susannah Hughes is:
35 i.   Susannah Cobb, born 1702 in New Kent Co., VA; died 1765; married (1) William Walton; married (2) Claiborne Rice Aft. 1747.

      72. James Rawlings59,60, born Bef. 1697 in England60; died Bet. April 09 - June 09, 1757 in Spotsylvania Co., VA60.

Child of James Rawlings is:
36 i.   James Rawlings, born Abt. 1715; died Aft. November 15, 1781 in Spotsylvania Co., VA; married Sarah Holladay.

      74. John Holladay60, died November 04, 1742 in St. George's Parish, King William Co., Va.61,62. He married 75. Elizabeth Lewis?.

      75. Elizabeth Lewis?63,64, born Abt. 170365,66; died March 06, 1797 in Spotsylvania Co., Va.66.

Notes for John Holladay:
Although Virginia Genealogies indicates that the Holliday family came from Scotland, there is too little information at present to connect the American Holladays with their British kinsmen. Tom Halladay was a nephew and companion of William Wallace, "Brave Heart."

  Notes for Elizabeth Lewis?:
She appears to be a matriarch of the Holladay family, which makes it likely that she is the person identified in later records as Elizabeth Penn, but this is not definite. There is another Elizabeth Penn who married a Joseph Penn, but she is at least one, probably two generations younger. There is also an Elizabeth Penn, wife of John Penn, about the same age as the younger Elizabeth above-mentioned. See Notable Southern Families, p. 166. It is highly unlikely that either of these younger women was born as early as 1703.

One published home page gives her maiden surname as Brocas, no source indicated. http://users.owt.com/flesher/gen/thomas/fam02135.htm, but another source says Elizabeth Brocas died 1735-1742, again without citing a source. http://www.skorina.com/familytree/WebCards/WC01/WC01_098.htm

Children of John Holladay and Elizabeth Lewis? are:
38 i.   Benjamin Holladay, died March 18, 1785 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia; married Mary Stevens? Aft. 1760.
37 ii.   Sarah Holladay, married James Rawlings.

      78. Charles Stevens, born Bet. 1702 - 1707. He was the son of 156. Charles Stevens and 157. Mary Munford.

Notes for Charles Stevens:
This is a guess. There is no direct evidence of who Mary's father was, if he was a Stevens. Charles Stevens "Sr." died in 1726, probably before Mary was born. Munford Stevens is a possibility. He is named in the will of Charles and was probably the eldest son. There is another Charles Stevens who continued to be named in real estate documents thereafter. I am guessing he is the second son of Charles, Sr., but there is no information about who he married or when. Charles is the only Stevens who seems to have any "connection" with the Holladay family. Both he and John Holladay (the father of Benjamin Holladay, most likely) witnessed a sale of land from John Ward of Spotsylvania Co. to John Woolfolk of Caroline Co. in 1728. Isaac Scott (probably the first husband of Mary Stevens) witnessed the sale of a city lot in Fredericksburg by Edward Herndon to Joseph Herndon in 1753. Edward Herndon and Benjamin Holladay witnessed a sale of land from John Walker to Henry Johnson in 1760, so these are the links that seem to show at least proximity of the Holladays, Stevens and Scotts.

By 1758 there was a Charles Stevens living in Lunenburg Co., VA, but I do not know if it is the same person or not. Was the "Hanover county" patent of the elder Charles Stevens sold so that his son could move to Lunenburg Co. [formed in 1746 from Brunswick] Brunswick Co. was formed in 1720.

Child of Charles Stevens is:
39 i.   Mary Stevens?, born 1729 in Spotsylvania Co., VA; died November 02, 1807 in Spotsylvania Co., VA; married (1) Isaac Scott Bef. 1757; married (2) Benjamin Holladay Aft. 1760.

      80. Valentine Ware, Jr.66, born Abt. 168666; died Bet. 1724 - 1740 in prob. King & Queen Co., VA66. He was the son of 160. Valentine Ware, Sr. and 161. Sarah Lea. He married 81. Mary Dudley?.

      81. Mary Dudley?67,68, born Abt. 168768. She was the daughter of 162. Col. Ambrose Dudley and 163. Anne Foster?.

Notes for Valentine Ware, Jr.:
Peter Ware's will refers to land he received from his father, which he then willed to his brother, Henry, but does not indicate who the father was. The land was 214 acres on Tuckahoe Creek. Valentine Ware received patents on 262 acres in 1723 and 167 acres in 1724, each on Tuckahoe Cr. See N.M. Nugent, Vol. III Cavaliers and Pioneers (Richmond 1979), pp. 246, 275. One half of the combined tracts is 214.5 acres, and Henry Ware already had some of the land when he received Peter's share. So it would appear that Valentine divided the land between them. This is fairly persuasive evidence of the father's identity, and because a patent refers to Henry Ware's line in 1740, it also establishes a range of dates for Valentine's death, which did not occur in Goochland or Henrico cos., because his estate was not administered in either of those counties. Both Henry and Peter's wills refers to a third brother, John, who apparently survived each of them. Edward Ware may also have been a brother or cousin.

  Notes for Mary Dudley?:
The idea that Ambrose Dudley had a daughter named Mary is speculation. But two years have passed since Wanda Ware DeGidio posted her analysis on the Dudley genealogy forum; no one has taken issue with it:
