HALIFAX BLAST KILLED ABERFELDY SOLDIER
An impressive military funeral was held at the Colchester Anglican Church, Essex County, on Monday afternoon, July 23, for a popular young man of this district, Patrolman Henry R. Craig, of the R.C.N.V.R. who was the victim of the explosion at Halifax on Wednesday, July 18.The body under military escort with Patrolman Young of Windsor, in charge arrived in Windsor on Monday afternoon and was taken directly to the church.
Patrolman Craig was born at Aberfeldy in 1911 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chalres Craig.He attended the districtschools there and after graduation left the farm and took employment elsewhere.He was an employee of the Ford Motor Co., Windsor, when he enlisted about three years ago.He took his training at the H.M.C.S. Hunter in Winds and two years ago he proceeded to the East Coast where he served on the Bedford Magazine.
Patrolman Young of the escort party had been his buddy for the past two years.He said that Patrolman Craig saw the fire and turned in the alarm and was proceeding back to duty when the fatal accident occurred.
Patrolman Craig is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Glennis Wright, of Harrow, whom he married about three years ago, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Craig, of Aberfeldy;seven sisters, Mrs. Norman Morwood, of Aberfeldy;Mrs. Merritt Smith, Inwood;Mrs. Albert Colgan, and Mrs. W. H. Smith, of Port Huron, Mich., Mrs. Dillon F. Luno, of Sarnia;Nursing Sister, 2nd Lieut. Ella R. Craig, of the United States Army of Wisconsin;Mrs. Harry W. Smith, of Petrolia, and four brothers,Charles Craig, of Detroit, Mich.,Douglas of Windsor, Allan, of West Lorne, and Tpr. Howard Craig, now serving with the Canadian forces of the Third Division in Germany.
The impressive services were conducted by the Rev. Smith Anglican Minister, assisted by the United Church minister, the Rev. Walker.The text was I Cor. 15-42 and the hymns used during the service were "The Son of God Goes Forth to War," "Abide With Me," and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul.Fourteen sailors from the R.C.N.V.R. Windsor and the military escort from Halifax formed a guard of honor at the church and at the grave side.The "Last Post" was sounded by the bugler.Interment was made in the Colchester Cemetery.
The funeral services were largely attended by relatives and friends, including all the immediate family, excepting the brother serving overseas.The many beautiful floral tributes bore silent testimony to the esteem with which the young sailor was held.
A memorial service will be held in Shetland United Church, Sunday afternoon, July 29, 1945, at 2:30 o'clock.

POSTHUMOUS AWARD
Patrolman Henry Raymond Craig, formerly of 835 Vimy Avenue, lost his life in this explosion.He is being posthumously mentioned in despatches.His widow is Mrs. Glennis Craig, R. R. #3, Harrow.
The citation accoumpanying the award states "For outstanding valor in the face of fire during the magazine explosion at Halifax in Jly, 1945.
{atrolman Craig was on duty at the south jetty when the first explosion occurred.he turned in the necessary alarm and then attempted at the scene to help extinguish the fire.
He was killed by the ensuing explosion before he could reach the scene. His bravery and resource were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Canadian Naval Service.
