Notes for Bryen (Bry) Wilkinson GALLANT: Obit Van Wert Times Peculiar Suicide of Bry Gallant A case of self destruction which carries with it a series of most horrible details ended the life of Bry Gallant, a prosperous farmer of Paulding county, near the Pennsylvania station in this city Saturday morning. Mr Gallant, suffering from mental depression caused by illness deliberately placed his head and shoulders under the wheels of a moving freight car and was practically decapitated. His arms were broken and he was mangled in most horrible fashion. Life was ended immediately, and after the remains had been placed for a short time in the freight depot of the Pennsylvania they were removed to the Gamble undertaking rooms and prepared for burial. Mr Gallant, who is 47 years old has resided in Paulding county, on a farm near Scott, for about 20 years, prior to which time he was a resident of Scott and employed in the factory of Leeson Cooperage Co. He was an exemplary citizen, a tireless worker and a gentleman possessed of a good disposition and even temperament. For some time he has been in poor health and recently sold his farm and moved to a home in Scott. Since last Tuesday he has been in this city undergoing a thorough physical investigation and has been during that time an inmate of the local hospital, not being confined to his bed, however. Friday he spent most of the day out on the street and again Saturday he expressed a desire to take a walk. While away from the institution on this pretense he was seemingly seized with a sudden impulse to end his life. Going to a point about 110 feet east of the Pennsylvania station he found package local no. 88 pushing a string of cars upon what is known as the house track, and with an astounding coolness walked to the track, knelt down and placed his head under the moving car. The act was witnessed by F D Mowery, an employee of the Pennsylvania Company, but there was no possibility of preventing the rash act. The remains of the unfortunate man were taken from under the train by John O'Mara and A. Vern Hester and were first identified by Dr. Morgan. Mrs Gallant, accompanied by her 6 year old son, Lester, were on their way to visit the husband and father, arriving in this city on the train from the north a short time before the occurrence--in fact they were on their way to the hospital when they were told of the tragedy. Mr and Mrs Gallant are the parents of five children, ranging in age from 6 -21 years all of a short time before the occurrence--in fact they were on their way to the hospital when they were told of the tragedy. Corner Sidle held an inquest at the Gamble establishment at noon Saturday and found that death was the result of suicidal intent. The remains were taken to Scott Saturday evening where funeral services were held Monday.
