Some of my findings have led me to Johan Emrich Bott who came to the United States from Germany in 1743. However, my great-grandfather, James Philip Butt, has always said that my family was of English descent. Despite this confusion, we are fairly confident my family's U.S. roots began in the Virginia area (probably around Rockingham County). In the early 1800s, some of my ancestors migrated to the Montgomery County, Ohio area. Some time later, James Philip Butt, my great-great-great-grandfather, moved to Veedersburg, Indiana. Much of my family stayed in the Fountain County, Indiana area from then on--I guess my generation is the first to be raised outside that area.

Below, I've attached a report on the descendants of Johan Emrich Bott. My connection to Johan is not definite--however, my connection to his assumed grandson, Henry Butt b. 1768 in Taneytown, MD, is fairly certain. I'm seeking to establish or refute the connection to Bott and, possibly, delve down even further into history.

The other side of my family is very German. My gg-grandfather, Carl Herman Heinrich Hohlt, came to the US in the 1870s and made his home in Indianapolis, IN. Below, I've attached a descendant report on the Hohlt line that goes back to the early 1700s. Carl Hohlt came to the US with brother Hermann Friedrich Wilhelm Hohlt. While Carl stayed in Indianapolis, Hermann went on somewhere out west. That was the last we heard of Hermann Hohlt. We'd like to find out what happened to him and his line.

Finally, one line I've tried to focus on lately is my Robinson line. This line lived for several generations in the area of Bruceville, Knox County, Indiana. I've traced the line to John (b. 1829) & Sally (b. 1824) Robinson--both originally from Kentucky. From there, my trail goes cold. Happy hunting!
