I am searching for the family of John P. Butts, born 12-Feb-1838 in Columbia, OH, died Jul-1895 Petra (Jackson Co), OH. John was in Jackson, OH in 1869 where his son William Roscoe Butts was born; both John and his wife (William's mother) were born in OH. John P. Butts and Eliza J. Wagoner were the parents of William R. Butts and possibly John Wesley Butts born 23-Jan-1875 Jackson, OH; discharged from Army in Nashville, TN 1865; land deed with William R., John Wesley and Charles Butts signatures in Jackson 1903 for Eliza to sell the family home. John P. was in the service prior to Oct-1862. John Butts 34YOM in Lick township (Jackson Co), OH in 1870 married to Eliza J. with 3 children, he worked in the mines and his father was of foreign birth, his personal estate was worth $150 in 1870. John Butts, Sr. of Petra (Jackson Co), OH died last Tuesday, July 16, 1895 reported by the Jackson Sun Wednesday, July 24, 1895). John P. Butts served in Co I of the 124th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry 9-Oct-1862 at Camp Cleveland, OH until 9-Jul-1865 at Nashville, TN; he was appointed sargent 30-Dec-1862 and reduced to ranks, then appointed corporal 1-Mar-1864; the 124th Regiment participated in the following battles 1) Thompsons Station, TN Mar-1863; 2) Chickamuga, GA Sep-1863; 3) Lookout Mt, TN Nov 1863; 4) Mission Ridge, TN Nov-1863; 5) Rocky Face Ridge, GA May-1864; 6) Resaca, GA May-1864; 7) Picketts Mills, GA May-1864; 8) Browns Ferry, TN Oct-1864; 9) Nashville, TN Dec-1864 (124th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry p386). John was born 12-Feb-1838 in Columbia and died 16-Jul-1895 from inflamation of the liver, serving as a private in Co K 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Tombstone in Rice Cemetary (Jackson, OH) states John P. Butts died 16-Jul-1895 aged 57Y 5m 4d.
