Descendants of Abraham Cooke, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. ABRAHAM2 COOKE, SR. (WILLIAM (?)1) was born Abt. 1665, and died Bef. 1748 in New Kent County, St. Paul's Parish, Virginia. He married MARTHA CLEATON Bef. May 1689 in Virginia, daughter of WILLIAM CLEATON and HANNAH UNKNOWN.

Notes for A
BRAHAM COOKE, SR.:
Old Rappahanock County Records, 1687-1690(now Totasky Cr, Richmond, Co.)
St Peter's Parish, New Kent/Hanover County, ca1690-death(?).

NOTE: In St Peter's Parish Vestry Book, Mathew & Hannah were born to Abraham Cooke in 1690's. Abraham's wife, Martha, is believed to have been dau of William? Cleaton/Clayton & Hannah. After his death, Hannah (?) Clayton, widow, then married __?__ MacAllister. So, in 1704 King William Co., Hannah Mackalister appoints her "loving son in law", Abraham Cooke, her attorney in fact. Hannah, therefore, would have been Hannah (?) Clayton-McAllister. This may account for the name "Clayton Cooke" as son of William Cooke(died ca1752), believed-son of Abraham & Martha.

Specifically, see Old Rappahannock Co., Virginia Deeds between William Clayton, son of William Clayton, deceased, and wife Mary, to Abraham Cooke & wife Martha, from May, 1689, to deeds-out by Abe Cooke in 1690. (the land in these deeds was 150 acres+/- on Totasky Creek, in present-day Richmond County. 100 acres of it was purchased by William Clayton Sr from William Landman, DB8,page 58; & 50 acres belonged to "my mother's estate", meaning William Clayton, Jr's mother, also noted in DB8,page 58, dated 5/6/1689, recorded 9/4/1689.)

I did find in my notes info from Tim Mattingley with the same Abraham
Cook as Athena. He states that Elizabeth Cass was a THIRD wife, & that a
note in an old letter says they(he?) had 25 children!!

Tim's stuff doesn't show a Nancy (only difference) but does show William
Cook as Abe's father. He shows Abraham's death date as 1801, Wilkes Co,
NC. Birth date is ca1721. Issue's: Larkin, May 1782(Larkin is a "Chew" & "Smith" name) Aaron, Sep/Oct 1783 mrd 1807 Patsey Deeney (Frances Cooke Butler had an Aaron)      Isaac, Apr/May 1785 mrd 1832 Sally Crickmore; Richard J., ca 1787 mrd 1811 Rebecca Cheek Amey (ca 1789-1869, Jay Co, IN) mrd 1807 Abednego Sanders(1776-1835); Wyatt, ca 1793. mrd 1812 Temporance Brown(Wyatt was a "Andrews" name) All were born in Wilkes Co., NC. Amy, Richard, & Isaac are names that point to the Surry Co, VA/Isle of Wight, VA Cookes.

Mattingly also shows Abe's siblings as: Eliza William, jr mrd 1784 Elizabeth Bedford.

Mattingly is from Indiana & desc.thru Amy Cook & Ab. Sanders.

Pam,
I'm excited to say the least.

If Mrs. Flournoy is right, then Clayton Cooke had a brother Abraham Cooke!!

Wonder if HE's the "phantom Abe" that resided adjacent to John on Green
Creek per that 1748 deed description? Remember, a survey of John Woodson's property next to John Cooke showed an "Abraham Cook" on John Cooke's northwest border. However, no land grant for an Abe Cooke made in that area. ACTUAL grant holder was Thomas Woods. Funny thing is, a Sally Woods witnessed a deed involving Cooke early on. Wonder if she was the Ex Mrs Cooke?
