Notes for R
OBERT LEO HOGAN, SR.:
From jean Schneider, Dec. 12, 1998: I recently read about the
Eisenhower Center in New Orleans, which is collecting memoirs,
histories, etc of WWII vets. I transcribed three of my father's letters,
one written on the troop transport ship to England, one written in Camp
Fargo, Wiltshire, England, and one from "somewhere in France" for
inclusion in the Archives. Also the letter from his Captain detailing
how he died. I'd like to share the letter from France with you. Jean -
"Clasen" that he refers to was his Captain, Glenn Clasen.

This letter was probably written near Vert St. Denis, France, based on
1st Platoon, Company A’s morning report for the date of August 25, 1944

Aug. 25
Dearest Mary K.,
Another mail call today but for some unhappy reason, I had no luck
whatsoever, I haven’t been able to write very much myself and know how
you probably feel at not hearing from me as regularly as I’d like to
write. I think of you and the kids a great deal and dig out the
pictures to remind myself of what a wonderful family I have back home
waiting for me to come back when Hitler finally decides to throw in the
towel - any day now will be perfectly all right with me.

No news except that everything is going very good - our cigarets are
becoming much more plentiful and we have been getting 10 in 1 rations -
those we used to get on the desert - we’ve had a little too much rain
for comfort but now the sun is out bright and warm and most of our
equipment is dried out. We weren’t given the honor of going into Paris
- that privilege was reserved for the French army - I saw some of them
going in and believe me there were lots of happy people and the wine ran
free as water - of course I got in on my share and we were fed a very
nice meal of bacon and eggs in one of the homes - was nice to use china
and silver again after several weeks out - I also had a chance to sleep
in a real bed but we got orders and had to move out - will get a chance
again I hope.

These people are the most insistent hand shakers you ever saw - the
whole family goes through the ceremony and if you pass the “cigs” they
all have one. They certainly appreciate some of the odds and ends we
give them from our rations - not that they are hungry but they do lack
variety.

We had quite a ceremony in a little town the other day. The Free
French had their headquarters in a castle and on our arrival they
hoisted the tri-color while we all stood at attention - then their
“chief” pinned a gadget on my jacket and I gave him my crossed sabers -
very touching I must say. Have much to tell you when I come back but
can’t write it as now it is regarded as military info.

Am hungry for the sight of you and the kids, sweetheart. I certainly
miss you now more than ever - guess it’s because I realize how darned
far away you are. Tell J.A. to keep praying that her daddy will be
home soon because he is mighty lonesome. From Bobby’s pictures, I’d say
he has grown six inches - surely is a husky isn’t he - can’t begin to
tell you how proud I am of you three or how much I love you - there
never was anyone so wonderful as you and every day I realize more and
more that you are all the world to me.

My moustache is absolutely red don’t know how that happens but it is
true - no change of coveralls since arriving and they are filthy.
Clasen and I did have a bath the other day - found a tub and some well
water - cold as hell but very refreshing. All the boys are well and
send their regards. Jack got some funny papers and we certainly have
enjoyed them - funny how you miss such things. Take good care of
yourself - watch the kids grow and remember I love you so very, very,
much and will be home before long to remind you -
Good-by and God Bless you all
Bob
P.S. I didn’t buy bonds, meant that I would send the money - another
pay-day soon and I can send home an additional $100 - about all I spend
any for is for bread and eggs for us.

ARY JAMES and ROBERT HOGAN are:

  Notes for JEAN ANN HOGAN:
Jean mentions that her James line is traced back to Christopher Butler that married Lucy Thompson, and the Butlers trace back to Elizabeth Butler that married William Claiborne, this Butler line traces back to England. It "may or may not" be associated with the Edmund "E" Butler line we are working on.

I need to look up John James/Justina Thurston, has some of Christopher James' line on it.
