About Our Family Research

I am a descendant of Moses Byers, born November 22, 1790, in Caswell County, North Carolina. Moses married Elizabeth Cooke October 11, 1811, in Greenville, South Carolina. Elizabeth was born May 7, 1795, in Greenville District, South Carolina. Elizabeth’s parents were Robert Fielding Cooke and Susannah Watson.

Moses and Elizabeth had 12 children, Osborn, Elias, Malinda, Oliver, Andrew, Alexander, Amanda, Emily, Leonidus, Alegenon, Richard and William. Osborn was born in South Carolina and the other children were born in Tennessee.

My line continues through Alexander Watson Byers, Sr.. He was born September 25, 1825. Alexander’s first wife was Leitha Grimes. Alexander and Leitha had 13 children, Marcus, Margaret, Andrew, Parilee, Jacob, Sarah, Nancy, Dora, John, Letha, Alexander, Frances and Granville. Alexander’s second wife was Martha Ann Parsons. Alexander and Martha had 9 children, Leitha, James, William, Charles, Infant, Leondas, Calvin, Martha and Mary.

Marcus Lafayette Byers was my Great Great Grandfather and he was born January 6, 1842, in Jackson County, Tennessee. Marcus first wife was Elizabeth Baty. Marcus and Elizabeth had two children, William Albert and Thomas. William was born March 8, 1865, in Indiana.

William Albert Byers married Emma Eliza Mitchell on January 23, 1896, in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California. Emma was born April 23, 1866, in Cottonwood, Tehema County, California. William and Emma had 7 children, born in California.

Emma’s parents were James Harrison Mitchell, born July 12, 1832 in Tennessee and Nancy Elizabeth Garrison, born April 10, 1829, in Indiana. James and Nancy had 8 children, Mary, George Wyatt, Margaret, Nancy, Lora, Emma and James Henry. The first three were born in Missouri and the others were born in California.

James and Nancy came to California by wagon train in 1859. One of James brother, John West Mitchell and sister Mary Louisa (Mitchell) Potter came to California with him. John and Mary settled in the Tehema and Shasta County, California area. James and his family settled in Sonoma County, California.

James parents were Mordica Mitchell and Lucretia Hutchison (Heutchison) and both were born in Tennessee. Nancy’s parents were Mark Alexander Garrison and Mary R. White.

I am seeking information on my Byers, Mitchell, Garrison and Grimes lines.
