A native of Arkansas, he first came to this part of the country 40 years ago and was employed as a teamster by the Union Labor Co., then operating at Newport where logs were hauled from the woods by Ox-team. In 1866 he moved from Newport to Fort Bragg, he helped lay the foundation for the present mill and also built the house on the northwest corner of Franklin and Pine Streets, one of the first houses he built in Fort Bragg, and occupied it for a number of years. He and his wife were members of the local Baptist Church, until moving to San Francisco. He leaves his wife and six children, Mrs. T. R. Bolden of this city; John and Fred Williams of Oakland, Jim Williams of Honolulu, Bert Williams of Chicago and Kenneth Williams of Fort Smith, AR, besides a number of grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral services wre held here Saturday in the Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Rev. J.H. Howe officiating. Per Mildred (Williams) Granlund - Allien drive an ox team in Fort Bragg, CA from 1885 to 1896. He moved his family back to Healdsburg in 1896 after suffering a severe injury when logs accidentally fell on him in the woods and crushed his leg. Byers, 62, local business man, died early yesterday morning at the family residence in Grove Street following an extended illness. He had been confined to his bed for several months, following a paralytic stroke. Byers who was a native of Indiana, came to Healdsburg from Tennessee, where his family had moved shortly after his birth, at the age of 31. Shortly after his arrival here he started a cleaning and dyeing business which he conducted for 25 years, selling it when he was forced to quit active business life. On January 22, 1896, he married Miss Emma E. Mitchell of Healdsburg who survives him. Until his illness he was active here in the affairs of the Presbyterian church. Besides his wife his is survived by four sons, William Herbert, of Newman, Charles of Oakland, Homer H. of Healdsburg and Lester Byers of Healdsburg, and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth E. Sierk and Mrs. Eola M. Purcell, both of Healdsburg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the chapel of Fred Young with Rev. N. A. Pankey of the Presbyterian church officiating. Members of the Woodmen of the World, fo which Byers was a member, will hold services at the grave in Healdsburg cemetery.
