* Descendants of Samuel Snoddy and Elizabeth Sloan*

Updated November 1, 2000

According to John Hale Stutesman's book, Samuel was born in 1727 (probably in Ireland). He married Elizabeth Sloan/Sloane (b: 1725). It is not known if they were married in Ireland or America. This same source states that Samuel’s oldest son, William, was born on April 20, 1749, but not where he was born.

The two earliest records of Samuel in North Carolina are: (1) in 1759 along with other settlers of the property owned by Lord Granville, he signed a letter to the King of England requesting assistance (guns, militia) to help these settlers defend themselves against the Indians; (2) Samuel’s 1764 bounty claim of 4 wolf scalps on the Rowan County court.

On July 22, 1768, Samuel and his son, William, were listed in the Rowan County, NC tax table in Captain Purviance’s district. By this time, he had 3 sons: William (b:1749); John (b:1758); Fergus (b:1759); and 4 daughters: Sarah (b:1753); Margaret (b:1756); Mary (b:1761); and Agnes/Nancy (b:1763).

On Feb. 11, 1775, Samuel was appointed one of the commissioners to lay off a road “from the provential road at Morrison’s Mill to the Lime Kilns on the Cattaba River.” At this time, Samuel had added 2 sons, Samuel, Jr (b:1768); and Thomas(b:1772), and a daughter, Elizabeth (b:1775).
