Samuel Snoddy 1727-1812) According to an old family bible, Samuel was born in 1727 (probably in Ireland). He married Elizabeth Sloan/Sloane (b: 1725). It is not known if they were married in Ireland or America. But this same bible states that Samuel’s oldest son, William, was born on April 20, 1749, but not where he was born.

The two earliest records of Samuel in North Carolina are: (1) in 1759 along with other settlers of the property owned by Lord Granville, he signed a letter to the King of England requesting assistance (guns, militia) to help these settlers defend themselves against the Indians; (2) Samuel’s 1764 bounty claim of 4 wolf scalps on the Rowan County court.

On July 22, 1768, Samuel and his son, William, were listed in the Rowan County, NC tax table in Captain Purviance’s district. By this time, he had 3 sons: William (b:1749); John (b:1758); Fergus (b:1759); and 4 daughters: Sarah (b:1753); Margaret (b:1756); Mary (b:1761); and Agnes/Nancy (b:1763).

On Feb. 11, 1775, Samuel was appointed one of the commissioners to lay off a road “from the provential road at Morrison’s Mill to the Lime Kilns on the Cattaba River.” At this time, Samuel had added 2 sons, Samuel, Jr (b:1768); and Thomas (b:1772), and a daughter, Elizabeth (b:1775).

Wiliam Snoddy, Sr. (1749-1812) - 1st child of Samuel Snoddy
William, the oldest son of Samuel, was born on April 20, 17491. He was listed in the Rowan County, NC tax table of July 22, 1768 in Captain Purviance’s district. Between 1771 and 1779, he served in the NC state militia during the “War of Regulation.”

In Wilkes Co, NC, on March 4, 1778, William, Sr. (age 29), entered 300 acres on the north side of the Yadkin River. On Feb. 5, 1779, he entered 300 additional acres on Blue Ridge, near the head of the Buffalo and Elk Rivers and on May 6, 1779, he was appointed overseer of a road in Captain Purviance’s district. On March 1, 1780, he received a NC land grant (No. 138) for 125 acres.

On Sept. 26, 1782, William, Sr. married Margrite McNeely in Rowan Co, NC. On the same date, he sold his land in Wilkes Co. to Elijah Isaacs for 500 pounds. This land sale record states that William was from Washington Co, NC.

On Jan. 30, 1784, William, Sr. received a NC land grant for 640 acres in Davidson Co, TN. In August of 1784 he was still in NC, but had migrated to Sumner Co, TN by 1787, since he is listed in the Sumner Co, TN tax records for that year. Presumably, his children (Rebecca, Peggy, Elizabeth and David), all born in NC, were with him. William, Jr. (b:1789) was his first child born in TN. William, Sr. served served in the state militia as a Lieutenant and is mentioned in The Draper Papers, which describes an Indian raid by the Indian Chief, Doubletree. William, Sr’s wife, Margrite, just have died between 1798 and 1801 since in Oct of 1801, at age 52, he married Betsy Orr in Sumner Co, TN. Betsy Orr Snoddy petitioned for a divorce on July 28, 1803. The divorce was granted by the presiding judge, Andrew Jackson. The divorce proceedings state that Betsy was “delivered of a child,” but no child of the appropriate age is ever mentioned either in wills or census records. When William, Sr. died in April of 1812, he listed only his children - no wife. Children of William Snoddy, Sr. and Margrite McNeely:
1. Rebecca Snoddy (1775- ) She married Ambrose Porter.
2. Peggy Snoddy ( ) She married Houston Cooper.
3. Elizabeth Snoddy
4. David Snoddy (1786-1858) He married Nancy Purvis.
5. William Snoddy, Jr. (1789-1825)
