Kilrush is a largest town in West Clare and is located on the Shannon estuary looking out on the the Atlantic . My research concerns the family of my Maternal Grandmother Bridget (Della) McKnight and My Maternal Grandfather Thomas Houlihan, who both came from Pound St, Kilrush, County Clare. My mother was born in Kilrush but I was born in London I have been able to trace both sides back to circa 1810. The McKnights resided in Kilrush Town at the turn of the 1800s but the Houlihan family only came into the town in 1910, Before that they lived in Carrowfree, Kilimer and prior to that in Dysart, where they were a farming family. A number of my ancesters emigrated to America but most remained in Ireland. It seems many of my direct ancesters survived the famine years - No mean feat in Kilrush as it was one of the poorest of the poor law unions | |
