Kaskaskia, Illinois Roots

Updated February 11, 2001

I have recently begun the search for my ancestors. It began with a book my aunt wrote " Kaskaskia Roots". It interested me so much I began my own search.
There were several of my ancestors that settled on Kaskaskia Island in the mid 1800's. Among them are the Mulhollands, Stipes, Marshalls, Roche, Abbey's and others.
They came from Ireland, Scotland, Holland and England, many of them coming by way of Virginia.
Of all of them , the Marshalls and Abbeys are proving to be the hardest to find. My grandmother, Mayme Margaret Marshall Mulholland was born to Charles and Mame ( Mary ?) Abbey Marshall in 1894 in Fort Gage Illinois. Charles died in 1900 leaving Mame with several children. I was told that she died soon after and the children were farmed out, but recently found out she didn't die till 1922. Where was she all that time ?? My grandmothers brothers were Ohra Freeman Marshall, who was , I was told, an artist, born 1-21-1897 and Floyd Allen Marshall, Born 4-29-1899, there was also a William Marshall. One child, Edith, died in 1891.
I would apreciate any information anyone has, and am more than willing to share mine.
