TILLER, Flora Jean (aged 94 years) - Passed peacefully away on Friday, January 14, 2000 at the Health Sciences Centre. Predeceased by her husband Cecil in 1990. Leaving to mourn daughter Eileen (husband Fred Norman), of Chilliwack, B.C.; two sons Norman (wife Phoebe) of Calgary, Alberta, and Rev. Cecil (wife Christine) of Keswick, Ontario; nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law: Wilhelmina Smith of Mount Pearl; also a number of nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Resting at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Sunday from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and Monday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Funeral service 11 a.m. on Tuesday from Barrett`s Chapel with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Notes for EWART GLADSTONE BAREFOOT:

Ewart Gladstone Barefoot ( named after an English Prime Minister ) began his working life as a teacher in Valleyfield, earning $25.00 a month. He was employed with Brown's Shipping, and sailed around Newfoundland eleven times, collecting salmon for Sydney on route to United States markets.

In 1942  while working on the boats, one caught fire and  all took to  life boats in order to save themselves from the burning boat. He did security work in Gander during World War 11. He also worked in the logging camps of Bonavista north in all kinds of weather,  summer and winter,  walking across country to and from his home on Pool's Island . He was plant manager at Monroe's plant on Sou-Wes island where he supervised the salting of 43,000 quintals of cod in one summer.  Later in  life he received the Merchant Marine medal for  service to his country during the war years. 

Ewart did a variety of work  teaching, logging, fishing, and plant work, a bit of everthing, an " interesting life " as he says.Looking back, he views it all in a flash, as if it was yesterday. He gave up driving his car at age 75, although his sight and hearing are excellent for his 91 years.

At 91 years he now resides at Otterbury Manor, Westleyville Bonavista Bay.

Notes for MINNIE PEARL SPURRELL:

Minnie Pearl Barefoot loved knitting and talking about her family and the past. She recalled her school days, when ninety pupils were all taught in on class by one teacher. Older students were expected to help the younger one in those days. During her 83 years she led a full and active life, raising ten children mostly on her own while her husband worked away to earn money to support his large family. 

Life was not always easy, but Minnie and Ewart  had great courage and faith. Her daughter Alma afflicted with polio died in 1968. Having to care for a disabled daughter for 32 years demands profound inner strenght, and brings the best in the human heart.

In 1959 she ran the Pool's Island  Post Office and in 1971 retired after 12 years. Her and Ewart then spent a numbers of years living with family in St, John's and travelling before taking up resident at Bishop Meaden Manor in St. John's. In 1997 they returned to Bonavista North and took up residence at Otterbury Manor  Seniors home in Wesleyville. Minnie pasted away in January 1998 due to cancer.
