I am recently retired and have begun to research my father's side of the family with the surname Cairoli. My grandfather, Vincenzo Porzio Cairoli emigrated to the U.S. from Torre del Greco (just outside Napoli, Italy) sometime around 1900. Several years ago while on a business trip to Salt Lake City, I visited the Mormon Library and was surprised to find a reference titled "La Famiglia Cairoli", published in Napoli by Enrico Detken, Editore, Piazza del Plebiscito, 1879. Interestingly, this is actually an Italian translation from the original article which is in English and was published in the Westminster Review (N. CIX, January, 1879). On a trip to London, I visited the British Library and was able to find the Westminster Review reference. However, I did not have a foreinger's permit and could not access the article. I plan to obtain it on my next visit. In the meantime, my sister-in-law, is doing some translating for me. I am presently filling in the family tree forward from my grandfather which is the easy part. Next, I want to try to fill in the gap with the historical Cairoli family (Fratelli Cairoli)mentioned in the above article assuming that there is a linkage that can be found. We have many anecdotal clues from family folklore, etc. As an interesting aside, the "Fratelli Cairoli" were the 5 brothers who fought in the war for Italian unification under Garibaldi. All died except Benedetto who later became Premier for a short while. My father's name is Benedetto and he had 4 sons. While growing up in N.J., I always thought that my name was very unique in that I could never find it, e.g. in phone books as I traveled around the country. With more modern searching tools, the Internet, etc,, I am surprised at the number of Cairoli's that are now listed. Of course, over the years the families have grown. Most are in N.J. and outside of our own relatives, my family does not know any them. I have just loaded the Family Tree Maker on the computer and will begin the process of searching. |
