Lawwill, Lawell, Lawwell Research

I am doing research on the Lawwill, Lawell, Lawwell surname. It is said the name is English and the first to America was a British Officer prior to or during the Revelutionary War. I have tried to prove this family tradition but find no records to support it yet. I also have evidence that the name may be Gaelic Irish anglicized from Maolfabhail to O Lawell,
O Lavelle, Lawell, Lavell, Lawill, etc.

  John Lawwill is found first in the 1790 New York Census spelled LAWILL. Later he is found in Adams County and Brown County, Ohio.
