Includes NotesNotes for John "Conkey" Gilmore:
"Conkey" was born about 1776-1778 in Western Virginia, a member of the Cherokee Nation. By the 1790's he was living in Tennessee. It is said (but not proved) that he was a member of a group known as the Chicamauga Cherokee which was a militant 'anti-removal' faction of the cherokee Nation. In 1907, one of his granddaughters wrote a letter that said he told her personally that he had killed a man and was forced to flee to Kentucky where he went by the name "Gilmer", "John Gilmer", and finally "John Gilmore.

During this period he married a woman named Mary Godfrey. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Jane Gilmore, who was born in 1798. Sometime in the next few years, Mary died and left John a single parent.

In July 1802, he married Mary Isaacs in Adair County, Kentucky. Together they had four known children. It is possible that there were other children. Mary died around the time of John's birth, if not in childbirth.

In about 1824, John married for the third time to Rhoda Garrison who had children from a previous marriage. They had one child.

At some poiint in the 1810 to 1817 period, the Gilmore family moved to Cole County, Missouri, settling on a farm near the present city of Jefferson City. It was in that county that most of John's children were married. In 1845, John and Rhoda moved to Texas County, Missouri settling aabout five miles west of the town of Houston. John "Conkey" Gilmore, a pureblood Cherokee, died before 1850. He is said to be buried in the Bilmore Cemetery, Northwest of Yukon, Missouri, but no stone or record exists for him there.
