      4. Blake2 Carlton II (Blake1) was born in VA, and died Bef. 1787 in VA.

Notes for Blake Carlton II:

The following is excerpted from information on the Caltons/Carltons of Surry County, North Carolina compiled in July and December of 1991 by:

Blake Carlton II is harder to follow. He seems to have been a poor man who died relatively young. He did not own land in Brunswick or Lunenburg County, and he died there before the family migration, or he died in North Carolina shortly after their arrival leaving no estate. Most of the Surry County court records from 1771-1779, which might document his death and/or children, are lost. By 1787 he was dead--probably long dead--when his son, John Flood Carlton, then aged about 18, bound himself out as an apprentice saddler in Surry County.

Blake Carlton II's wife was, no doubt, a daughter of John Flood of Brunswick County. John Flood*, also a poor man, was dead by 1765 when his daughter Lucretia was bound out. It may be Lucretia Flood who was Blake's wife or an older sister, since it is possible that Blake was married by 1765.

* There is a well-known and wealthy Flood family, with connections in Brunswick County--descendants of John Flood who came to Surry County, VA about 1610. There is no indication that the John Flood found in only the one record in Brunswick County, was a close relative.

"It is only conjecture that among his children were:" (Frederick Carlton, George Carlton, John Flood Carlton)

"...except for one proven son, John Flood Carlton, one can only suggest that those in Surry County who used the first name "Blake" are his children. This would include Frederick Carlton, who was in Surry from at least 1790 until 1810, before moving to Spartanburg Co, SC. Blake Carlton III (b1764) of Greenville County SC may be another son, although no record of him has been found in Surry County".
