Biography; page 703; History of Lancaster Township, Huntington County, Indiana (1887), preceding that of John S. Buzzard:

George Buzzard, a native of Adams County, O., was born September 1, 1819, the eldest son of John and Rachel (Ruggles) Buzzard, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky. John Buzzard, in 1834, settled in Tippecanoe County, Ind., and one year later moved to Huntington County, having been one of the earliest pioneers of this state. He was by occupation a farmer and died in this county on the 5th of June 1855. His wife survived his several years, departing this life on the 12th day of April 1881. George Buzzard grew up with but a few advantages for obtaining an education, but by applying himself in later years, having always been a reader, has become quite well informed upon all the general topics of the day. He was raised a farmer and early chose agriculture for his life work, and at this time owns a beautiful place of 160 acres of valuable land in Lancaster township, the result of his persevering industry. He remained with his parents until his marriage which was solemnized on the 24th of July 1844 with Mrs. Mary A. (Shanklin) Cline, who has born him the following children, viz,: John S., born May 24, 1845, Mary E., born September 14, 1846, died June 19, 1857; Sarah C., born May 6, 1852; George B., born September 6, 1854; Charles H., born June 14, 1857 and Jesse J. , born January 24, 1859. Mr. Buzzard in 1852, was elected trustee of Lancaster township, the duties of which office he discharged in a creditable manner until 1863. In 1876, he was elected on the democratic ticket a member of the board of County Commissioners, besides which he has frequently served in various official capacities. He was one of Lancaster's representative men, and with his wife belonged to the Church of God.

ESSE I. BUZZARD:
[ebling.FTW]

Thomas Ruggles in his 1931 HISTORY OF THE BUZZARD FAMILY reported that," Jessie Buzzard; Born 1828; Died 1896; 68 years; Married Jane Couch." However, a family group sheet in the Buzzard family's file in the Indiana Room of the Huntington (IN) library claims that he was born and died much earlier; that is, that he was born July 5, 1822 and died July 15, 1890. Interestingly, both agree that he was 68 years of age when he died and that he married Jane (Priscilla) Couch.

Thomas Ruggles' in his 1931 account also states that, "The Seven children brought here from Ohio by John Buzzard and wife Rachel when they moved to Wayne Twp. were George, Henry, John, JESSIE, Sarah, Lucinda and Betsy. Those born after coming here were Wesley and Robert Buzzard. "

Both sources noted above offer evidence that Jessie Buzzard was alive in 1840; howere, there is an unexplained absence of evidence of this in the 1840 Census of Huntington County, Indiana.

As is the case with his sister Rachel, alternate birth years have been advanced by researchers for Jessie Buzzard - 1822 and 1828. If born in 1822 he would have been 18 years of age, and if present in the household in 1840, the enumerator should have recorded a "3" and not a "2" in the category "15, under 20;" or, if born in 1828, he would have been 12 years of age, in which case there should have been a "1" in the column for males "10, under 15." A microfilm copy of the enumerator's hand written record for the John Buzzard household reveals neither to be the case.

No source is cited for the Thomas Ruggles' data; sources for the family file data are cited as census and cemetery records, and presumably the more accurate. On the other hand, the order in which Thomas Ruggles reports the seven children that were brought to Wayne Township, which is consistent with the order of the births of the girls, suggests that Jessie was born after John; i.e., in 1828, as Thomas Ruggles claimed, and not 1822. The pattern of births also supporta the notion that he was born in 1828.

The matter of the years of his birth and death might be readily resolved if there has been a recording error; that is, if the last digits of the birth and death years have been misread - the "0" and "6" and the "2" and "8." If taken off of an old tombstone or paper record this could easily be the case.

The lack of the recorded presence of Jessie in the household in 1840 (whether he was 12 or 18), however, is less easily explained. It is possible, of course, that it was simply a self-reporting error. John Buzzard (or Rachel) may have simply forgot about Jessie when reciting the gender and ages of their children, as they had 10 to remember; or, the enumerator may have just failed to make a stroke mark in the "Male, 10, under 15" column.

  Notes for WILLIAM BUZZARD:
Bio from "History of Huntington County" Indiana 1914 By Frank S. Bash pg 658-659

William Buzzard. The dignity of labor raises the farmer to a level of importance corresponding to that occupied by any class of producers. To labor long and faithfully, giving the best of one's ability and talents along any line of endeavor, is to fulfill the destiny of mankind and to make possible a happy, contended old age. William Buzzard, one of the substantial farmers and highly esteemed citizens of Salamonie township, is a man whose life has been one of constant industry and honorable labor, but who although always busy, has never failed to find time to make friends or to contribute to the welfare and advancement of his community.
Mr. Buzzard was born in Jefferson township, Huntington county, Indiana, November 26, 1859, and is a son of Jesse and Jane (Couch) Buzzard. The parents were early settlers of Wayne township, in this county, but after their marriage removed to Jefferson township, and spent the remainder of their lives on a farm, the father dying July 7, 1896, and the mother November 27, 1913. They were the parents of seven children, of whom four now survive: Henry, whose home is in Ohio; William, of this review; Lucinda; and Luella, who is the wife of Leander Tumbleson. William Buzzard was reared on a farm in Jefferson township, and there secured good educational advantages. It was customary for farmers' sons of his day to spend the greater part of their time in the fields, and their literary training therefore was confined to such opportunities as offered themselves during the short winter terms in an adjacent district school. Mr. Buzzard was a studious lad, with a retentive mind, and he was able to acquire a much better education than many who had greater advantages. He was reared to agricultural work, and when it came to the time for him to make a choice of vocations he decided upon becoming a farmer, a decision which he has never had reason to regret. He continued to work on the home farm until 1886, having charge thereof from the time he reached his majority, but finally determined to establish a home of his own and accordingly left the parental roof. Mr. Buzzard secured his present farm by purchase in August , 1899, a tract of seventy-five acres located two miles northeast of Warren, on the M. B. & E. Traction line, an excellent location. Mr. Buzzard has one of the valuable farms of its size in Salamonie township, and takes a pride in making it pay in full measure for all labor expended upon it. He has brought the land to a high state of development through scientific treatment of the soil, has a set of handsome, substantial buildings, and his machinery and equipment are the latest manufacture. In business circles he is known as a man of the strictest integrity, alert to grasp each opportunity, yet thoroughly respecting the rights of others. In political matters he is a democrat, but he has never been a politican.
On February 7, 1885, Mr. Buzzard was married to Miss Minerva R. Myers, who was born and reared in Jefferson township, a daughter of Irwin C. and Elizabeth (Mast) Myers, of Fairfield county, Ohio. They came to Huntington county, and were early settlers here. Mr. and Mrs. Buzzard have numerous friends throughout this locality.
