Notes for J
OHN BRICKEY:
[family tree.FTW]

John Brickey Sr. was the first and only Brickey progenitor to come to America, landing first in South Carolina around 1680. His last name was spelled "DeBrique or Briquette." This was later changed to "Brickey" because it was the American pronunciation. John stayed for about a year in South Carolina and they went to Maryland. He left France during the St. Bartholomew Massacre in 1685. According to the Brickey records, "the streets ran red with Huguenot blood." John made his escape with his family and migrated down to Westmoreland Co. Virg. around the year 1710. John seems to have got himself into a lot of legal troubles upon arriving to America. This was probly due to the fact that he was unfamiliar with the customs. Between the years 1690 and 1692 he had six suits of various plantiffs filed against him in court. Most were dismissed. These suits can be found in the Westmoreland Co. Book 1690-1698, pg 8, pg 17a, pg 28 and pg 42. There is also a record of John Brickey witnessing a deed on June 29, 1699.
John Brickey is also known as a "man of letters and expert accountant."
