Notes for L
AVINIA GOOZEE:
Copied from a letter in possession of Ethel McBride, daughter of Lavinia Goozee Valentine.

"This was given by Mrs. Valentine at a meeting of the Wednesday ??? Club. "

Mrs. Valentine, Sr. gave the club ladies a very interesting story of her life in the United States. She, with a sister and brother* decided to leave England, their home by birth, and join an older brother that had preceded them and taken up some land at Devil's Lake, North Dakota, which was a territory at that time. After visiting the relatives and telling them good-bye, and the thought of leaving their father, they were quite depressed, but the brother gave them the courage they needed and they left London in April 1884 for America. They were on the sea 16 days and thought their trip nearly completed but it took them 6 days more to reach their destination, where they were met by the brother living here and their mode of conveyance was a wagon and an ox team. The snow was piled high along the road side and the girls thought it great sport to walk through these banks, but soon found they were getting their cloths wet, and they had 8 miles to go. Arriving at their home where the brother and Mr. Valentine were living found a far different home than the one left in England. They adjusted themselves and became accustomed to it. For entertainment they sang hymns, raised chickens, and they had a cow, also visited their neighbor 4 miles away but as accustomed to walking they did not mind this walk, and was a real pleasure they looked forward to taking. They missed the church services and were very lonely at times and tears were often shed. The brother that accompanied them took up a claim and built a house near a Fresh water lake. Mrs. Valentine also took up a claim. This was before her marriage. A heavy prairie fire came and destroyed their house and several stacks of hay and this delayed the wedding of her to Mr. Valentine, as he had to fell the trees and build a new house which was built of logs with cracks filled with a clay. She kept house for her brother and three others for this year and she and Mr. Valentine were married in 1887. Their first baby was born there and 1 1/2 years later the second baby came. There was no physician to be had but a dear lady, a mid-wife, cared for her and the dear babes. In 1890 they came to California and lived in Nevada City for a short time then came to Burbank where they planted acreage of potatoes and cabbage. But pests of insects caused complete loss of crops and caused many hardships. they then moved to East Los Angeles and Mr. Valentine purchased a team of horses and a wagon and sold vegetables and fruit to the housewives. Later sold out that business and opened his first grocery store on avenue 22 and Downey avenue which today is North Broadway. This was near a large pigeon farm which was known as the largest in the world and the ostrich farms were near also. Later sold this to the two sons and the rest of the family went to Madera but soon returned to Los Angeles and for several years owned the grocery store on Washington and Centinella Blvds. Now are retired and live in Culver City, Olin St. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of 9 children and 14 grandchildren.
*The sister and brother were Anne Goozee and William Ellinger Goozee Jr.

Here is another note, written by: C. R. Valentine in December, 1946.

Mrs. C. R. Valentine 1866 - 1946. Born in the little village of Ringwould, four miles from Dover, England, emigrated to America in 1884 with a sister and brother and settled in the territory of North Dakota of that same year. The brother had secured 160 acres of Uncle Sam's land near a quite large and beautiful lake. For the first two years she kept house for the brother and lived in a board and sod shack. The story is told of her, how in the summer time on a Sunday morning she would take her prayer book and hymnal and sit on the banks of the lake and would go through the whole church service all alone - singing psalms and hymns in her beautiful true and sweet voice, with no one to hear her but God and the wild ducks and birds. Later, they moved 75 miles further west on the Mouse river, where there was timber. She married in 1887 to C. R. Valentine and started house keeping in their first real home on America, the old log house. She grew up in the old village church with a 12th century history, under the influence and guidance of a faithful rector and his wife, whom she very much revered. She had a great love and inspiring devotion for the church of the early faith. She became a member of this particular Church of the Holy Faith in Inglewood, California, with part of her family, in 1922. Mrs. Valentine had none good and dutiful children, seven of whom are still living. Her eldest daughter, Mrs. Ethel McBride, has been officiating at the organ at this church almost continuously since 1922, up to about a year ago when she needed a well earned rest. Mrs. Valentine loved to sing in the sanctuary the lovely music of the church, and in later years when she was no longer able to march in with the choir, she would slip in the back way in order to take her pace in the stalls. And now as we see the gates of the Holy City opened wide and close after her, but she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory - she is a living presence.
