Notes for John Clore: PER CATHI CLORE FROST'S RESEARCH: The following information is from the Clore-Glore Genealogy manuscript by Delma Rae Carpenter, Sr. (1881-1967). A copy of this is available at the Madison Co., VA Library. This manuscript is a typescript and update of another, handwritten, Clore-Glore Genealogy manuscript by Dr. Arthur Leslie Keith. The original of Keith's manuscript is at the Newberry Library, Chicago., IL. Please note that some of this information has been updated by other researchers in the meantime and I'll try to add notes with the current information. Page 25-26: John Clore (son of John Clore) was born January 22, 1749, died December, 1824, married Margaret Blankenbaker, who was born November 28, 1749, died January 6, 1840, daughter of Michael Blankenbaker and wife Elizabeth Barbara Gaar, said Michael being the son of John Nicolaus Blankenbaker of the 1717 colony. John Clore and Margaret Blankenbaker were probably married in 1767 in which year she was sponsor at the baptism of Julius Christler, son of John George Christler. She also served as sponsor of other children of John George Christler, 1769 and 1773. John Clore, Jr., and wife Margaret Clore served as sponsors of several of the children of Michael Clore, 1770, 1772, and 1773. For some unaccountable reason the baptisms of their own children do not appear in the Register. John Clore and wife later joined the Baptist Church but probably not before 1775. [Note from Cathi - They are on the communion list for Christmas 1776 at Hebron Lutheran, see below.] In 1787, 1788, and 1792 John Clore was taxed for 278 and 211 acres, Culpeper Co., Va. In Madison Co., Va., 1814 he was taxed for 133, 75, 100, 160, 22, and 178 acres, described as lying 9 miles north of the Court House, on the Robinson River and joining land of William Strother. These lands seem to have been in part at least portions of the patents of Michael Clore. On February 7, 1799 John Clore and wife Peggy sold to Thomas Shurley and Zachary Shurley. Three letters of this John Clore are in existence and now owned by Mrs. Emma Clore Vetter of Norfolk, Virginia. The first of these letters is dated May 23, 1805, from Madison Co., Va. to his son Benjamin Clore and other of his children in Kentucky. The second letter is dated October 31, 1809 and is addressed to Benjamin Clore, Jefferson Co., Ky., also to Elijah, Lawrence, and Solomon Clore, and his son-in-law Jesse Yager. This letter mentions land which he owns in Kentucky which someone else is claiming and he instructs Benjamin Clore to hire a lawyer and defend his claim. He also speaks of trying to sell his land and moving out to Kentucky. But he never did. The third letter is dated March 29, 1810 and is addressed to Benjamin and Anna Clore, Elijah and Frances Clore, Lawrence and Lucy Clore. He says that his son Abraham is planning to move to Kentucky the following fall and that he is to occupy his (John's) farm. He also recites several business matters he is carrying on for Shirleys and Wilhoits now living in Kentucky who had once lived in Madison Co., Va. The records of the Robinson River Baptist Church show that in 1825 a committee was appointed to write the history of John Clore's life, he having recently departed. Evidently he was considered a man of some prominence. Unfortunately this history, if ever written, seems not to have survived. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Hebron Communion Lists: Communion Lists of the Hebron Lutheran Church 1775 to 1812 Madison, Virginia by John Blankenbaker (Chadd's Ford, PA 2001): p 8 Communicants Christmas A.D. 1776 Johannes Klor Jun wife Margaretha History and Families, Oldham County, Kentucky, The First Century 1824-1924 Oldham Co., KY Historical Society Turner Publishing Co., Paducah, KY 1996 Page 67, 69 In 1808, five brothers by the name of Clore traveled from Culpepper [sic], VA and settled on a 2,000 acres tract in the same area as the Ross grant. The brothers were Benjamin, Elijah, Lawrence, Solomon and James. The brothers also brought their three sisters: Elizabeth, Ann and Sarah. Most of the migrating families were of German ancestry and came from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. According to the writings of W.C. Barrickman, the settlers from Virginia probably came over the "Wilderness Road," while the others came by boat down the Ohio River from the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Deed Abstracts of Madison County, Virginia 1793 - 1804: Madison County Deed Book 1 (1793-1796), Madison County Deed Book 2 (1796-1801) and Madison County Deed Book 3 (1801-1804), Abstracted and Published by Ruth and Sam Sparacio (1986), p 45: Deed Book 1, p 429-431: On Margin.
