OHN MCGEORGE:
John McGeorge lived in Lochfoot which was a small village in the parish of Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire Scotland.
According to the entries in the parish register of the baptisms of his children he was a taylor (tailor) and a mason. In the 1831 census of Lochrutton it was noted that he was part of the clergy.
John married Jean Milligan daughter of John Milligan of Knowhead in February 1774. He paid the church 1/- to have his marriage banns read.

Lochrutton parish was 4 1/2 miles by 3 wide so it was a very small parish. The population in 1790 was 528. The church was built in 1819. According to the minister of the time it afforded accommodation of up to 300 sitters. The number of families who belonged to the established church was 109 in 1844. There were none in the parish who could not read and few who could not write.
The fuel commonly used was peat and there were several mosses in the parish which the farmers were allowed the privileged of cutting what fuel they needed but not to sell
In 1766 according to the entry in the parish register, payments were given for keeping the churchyard in order - 2/-

Marriages 1697-1790, 1841-54. records for 1736-52 appears to be chiefly proclomations.
Births 1698-1854
Deaths 1766-90 1841-54
The register appears to have been discontinued 1783-1806 on account of the government tax on entries. At the latter date, a record for the period in question was made "from notes kept by the Minister of the births and the best information that could be found" Mothers names are not recorded.
