I have not been able to find just when John Fredrick Behrens came to NZ, but according to his marriage application he was in the Papanui district for 3 years making the date about 1863. He is not the assisted immigants list to Canterbury. He was a farmer when he married Charlotte Rippingale. He married in St Peters Church, Riccarton. Why they married several miles away from where they lived is a mystery. Their local church was half a mile away. Edward Rippingale, Charlottes father was a witness.

Frederick was admitted to Christchurch Hospital Sep 24 1871 with fractures after being dragged from his horse. (Lyttelton Times Sep 1871) He was discharged 3 Feb 1872.
The following is an account in the Lyttelton Times. 27th Sep 1871
A serious accident occurred to a man named Fredk. Barnes near the Selwyn Railway Station on Sunday last. It would appear that he left the station in company with a man named Wilson to return home some two miles away, where he was thrown from his horse, Dragged several chains, and his right thigh broken. This in itself was bad enough, but not the worst, for the unfortunate man received no assistance until eight o'clock next morning, and thus had to lie unattended all night on the plain. When the two men left the station, Wilson was mounted on a young horse of light build, whilst Barnes rode a young draught filly. Barnes did not like to let his animal go at a quick pace, and therefore held back, thus permitting Wilson to get considerably ahead.. The filly did not like being held in and became restive, Barnes tried to control her, but could not and was ultimately thrown, and failing to disengage himself from the stirrups was dragged about five chains. After getting free, the filly overtook Wilson, but the latter thought Barnes had most probably got off his horse, and it had then broken away, He accordingly did not attach much importance to the circumstance, and continued his journey home. Next morning Barnes's father in law thinking his absence strange went to look for him and found him on the ground with his thigh broken and his face much cut. Measures were at once taken to convey him to the hospital, and we are glad to say that he is now doing very well.
