'My name is Edward Rippingale, I am a farmer residing at Ashburton Forkes, in the County of Ashburton. I am grandfather of the deceased. She was living at my house at the time of her death. On Saturday evening the 14th June, Lousia Martha Barnes was in her usual state of health. She spent the early part of the evening reading. Toward nine o'clock she complained of her feet being cold and warmed them at the stove. She then went to bed. About midnight she rose and had some tea. She went to her bed again and between four and five in the morning of Sunday the 15th her grandmother went to her bedroom and coming back to my bedroom said the deceased girl was still complaining of cold feet and advised getting some hot water for her feet. Her grandmother got the hot water ready and before she applied the hot water she called out - Ted, the girl is dead. I got up and tried to get a horse to go and fetch a doctor but owing to the darkness, I could find one in the paddock. Went to my son in law who went for Dr Twe..
