I am trying to get things updated....a never ending task!! _______________________________________________________________ CAMPBELL Origin: Celtic & Gaelic Wry-mouth, the man whose mouth inclined a little on one side; from cam, crooked, distorted, & beul, the mouth. This ancient family may be traced as far back as the beginning of the 5th century & is said to have been possessed of Lochore, in Argylshire, as early as the time of Fergus II. Sir Colin Campbell, of Lochore, flourished toward the end of the 13th century & was called Sir Colin More, or Colin the Great. His descendants were called by the Irish McCallen, that is, the descendants of Colin. (Etymological Dictionary of Family & Christian names) The oldest CAMPBELL family member is Francis CAMPBELL born in Co. Cork in 1809. In 1836, he married Sarah NOBLET (of Huguenot origins) in the Diocese of Ossory.
