It is my belief that if we shared the stories of our heritage and family history with our children when they are small, they will grow up with a better idea of who they are and what their place is in this world. I did not come from a family that was rich with wealth but I did come from a family that is rich in history and heritage. I wish I had known, way back in my teens, whose blood I had coursing through my veins. If I had only listened a little closer when family members shared some of the stories of these courageous ancestors with me, maybe I would have walked with my head held a little higher. My mom's ancestors were some of the first settlers in the area in which I was raised. They were prominent, hard working, well-respected citizens. My mom's dad tried to share these things with us, but like most kids, we didn't take time to really listen to what he was trying to instill in us. He took us for Sunday afternoon drives to cemeteries and would point out which relatives were buried where and share anecdotes that he had heard from his parents. Now, I look back on those times and wish I had listened more intently to what he had to say.
That is why this is so important to me. I want to preserve our rich family history for my children and their children...on down the line; so generations from now, maybe some descendant who thinks they are insignificant and a nobody, will realize just whose blood is running through THEIR veins.
My mom's ancestors include the WRIGHTS OF BLOOMERY. They were Quakers and Nicolites who helped settle what is now the Smithville area near Federalsburg, MD; the HOWE, ROSEBROOK, CRAWFORD, BRIGHAM, BIGELOW and TOWNE(S) families of New England. Three of the Townes sisters were persecuted during the Salem witchcraft trials. Rebecca Townes Nurse and Mary Townes Esty were both executed; their sister Sarah was tried but never put to death.; and the INSLEY, GOOTEE, and STEVEN families who settled in Dorchester Co., MD.; and the HOPKINS, ELBEN, RASH, TRUAX and FINSTHWAITE families. Dad's ancestors include the SKIPPER, AKEHURST, NAYLOR, and HOOK families of Baltimore County, MD. Dad's father, Carl (Charles) August NORDBERG came from Hullberga, Brando parish, Aland; a small island in the archipegelo islands between Sweden and Finland; Thus there are numerous Scandinavian roots as well. Such as SUNDQVIST, ANDERSDOTTER, PERHSDOTTER,etc.
Ron's ancestors include The CANNON, SIMMONS, LANKFORD, HURLEY, TODD and RUARK families of Dorchester Co., MD and the WEBSTER, WALLACE, WHITE, ROGERS families of Somerset CO., MD. There are many, many more surnames from these and surrounding areas included in our files.
