Capt. Ogle B. Cannon

Capt. Ogle B. Cannon of 504 Academy Street died Sunday at 8:30 PM in University Hospital , Baltimore, following surgery. On Friday he became ill and was removed to Dorchester General Hospital and after examination was transferred by ambulance to the University Hospital where heart surgery was performed, but due to his critical condition and his age, he failed to respond to treatment.
He was born in Cambridge, Nov. 28, 1893, being 80, the son of the late M. Burgoyne and Lucy Elizabeth Foxwell Cannon.
He was born, raised and spent his entire life in Cambridge. He attended public schools here and as a young man,  joined his father working on the water. He remained in this work his enite life and was one of the most widely known watermen in this area.
Capt. Cannon was a gifted vocal soloist and during his life had been a member of several singing groups; for a number of years he was soloist at Christ Episcopal Church here.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Magnolia Lankford Cannon to whom he was married on Dec. 28, 1915. One Daughter, Mrs. Ethel Durandetto of Salisbury; five sons, Wallace L., Robert H., Ogle Jr., Donald B., and Eldridge W. Cannon, all of Cambridge; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Layton of Cambridge; four brothers, G. Elmer, Samuel M., and Philip L. Cannon of Cambridge and S. Burgoyne Cannon of East New Market. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Magnolia L. Cannon

Cambridge- Magnolia L. Cannon of Cambridge died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997 at her home. She was 102.
Born April 28, 1894 at Cokeland, she was the daughter of the late Luther J. and Elnora Hurley Lankford. Mrs. Cannon attended schools in Sharptown. In December 1915, she married a local waterman, Ogle B. Cannon. He died in August 1974.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Navy Mothers. She was active at the MAC Center and in the 1980's made more than 50 lap robes, which were donated to V.A. hospitals at Elsmere and Perry Point.
Mrs. Cannon is survived by a daughter, Ethel Cannon Durandetto of Cambridge, four sons, Robert H. Cannon, Eldridge W. Cannon, Donal B. Cannon and Ogle B. "Timmie" Cannon Jr., all of Cambridge; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. A son Wallace L. Cannon is deceased as are 3 sisters, Anna Russell, Beulah Gould and Virginia Slacum and four brothers, Atlee Lankford, Clarence Lankford, Luther Lankford and Lloyd Lankford.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sat. February 15 at Thomas Funeral Home, Cambridge. Burial will be at Dorchester Memorial Park.

                                     CAPTAIN M. B. CANNON DIES AT HOSPITAL

                      Born at Hoopers Island and Had Followed The Water During Entire Life

News of the death of Capt. M. Burgoyne Cannon, who died at the Cambridge, Maryland Hospital yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock came as a distnct shock to his many friends in Cambridge and the county.
Capt. Cannon suffered a fall at his home Friday morning, which resulted in a broken hip. He was carried to the hospital where he succumbed from embolism.
He was born and reared at Hoopers Island and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cannon of that place. He was 84 years 3 mnths and 25 days of age.
Captain Berg as he was familiarly known to his many aquaintances, had followed the water his entire life or until his retirement in 1930 and was widely known throughout the tide-water sections of the state. He had resided in Cambridge for nearly half a century and during his entire residence here he had been a member of Grace Methodist Church, of this city and was also a charter member of the Baraca Class. Mr. Cannon had been a very faithful and loyal member to his church and it's precepts and had tried to live a life that exemplified the teachings of the church.
He was devoted to his home and family and was a gentleman of the highest type, honest in all his transactions, sincere in his opinions, considerate and thoughtful of his family and loved ones and a man whose life stands out as an exemplary one to the community.
He was twice married. His first wife who was Miss Mary E. Simmons, Hoopers Island, died September 13, 1892. By this union he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joseph E. Taitt of Cambridge. Later he married Miss Lucy Elizabeth Foxwell of Golden Hill, by whom he is survived. He is also survived by two daughters and five sons by the union; Mrs. Evelyn Layton of Cambridge, Mrs. Elizabeth Collen of Wilmington, Ogle B., G. Elmer, Samuel M., S. Burgoyne, and Phillip L. Cannon all of Cambridge. One sister, Mrs. Amanda Morgan of Cambridge. Seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren  and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral sevices will be conducted from Grace Methodist Church, Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. Ralph J. Yow officiating.
Friends may view the remains from the LeCompte Funeral Home until tomorrow at twelve o'clock. The body will then lie in state from 12 to one at Grace Methodist Church.

                                                Mrs. Colen Dies In Baltimore

	The entire community was shocked to learn of Miss Ann Elizabeth Cannon Colen's death which occurred yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where she had been a patient for the past month.
	Although Mrs. Colen entered the hospital several weeks ago her condition had not been considered alarming and she had expected to return to her home in a short time fully restored to health.
This past Monday week she suffered a relapse and had been critically ill since that time.
	Mrs. Colen had been born and resided practically her entire life in Cambridge and was the daughter of Mrs. Lucy Foxwell Cannon and the late Major Burgoyne Cannon of this city. She was 34 years, six months and nine days of age.
	She was widely known here especially among the younger set. She had been associated with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Clark Cannon as a beautician and through this connection had enjoyed a wide aquaintance and a large and select clientele. Mrs. Colen also had been associated with the Eugene of Paris Beauty Salon of Wilmington, Del. for several years and was considered a very competent beautician.
	She had been a member of Grace Methodist Church since early girlhood. (?She was a very and they too were especially devotedly attached to her loved ones and the ytoo were especially devoted to her?   misprint in the paper).  Mrs. Colen possessed a lovely personality which radiated a charm which endeared her to her many friends.
	She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Lucy Foxwell Cannon of Cambridge, a sister and five brothers, Mrs. Evelyn Cannon Layton of Cambridge, Ogle, G. Elmer and Samuel M. Cannon of Cambridge and S. Burgoyne Cannon of Baltimore. Phillip L. Cannon, the youngest brother, has been reported missing in Germany. She is also survived by a half-sister, Mrs. Joseph E. Taitt.
	Funeral services will be conducted from the LeCompte Funeral Home, Froday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Re. John Wooten officiating. interment will be in the Cambridge Cemetery.

John H. Cannon - On wednesday last, June 2nd, John H. Cannon, a well known resident of Fishing Creek, entered into his final rest after a long illness. His wife has lost a loving companion, his children a devoted father, the community a good citizen, the church an earnest and zealous member, he having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South for about forty years.
He was sixty-seven years of age and was for many years a well known figure not only at home but in Cambridge and wherever known, was noted for his upright character, his rugged honesty, his loyalty and his sincere desire and determination to do that which he believed to be right.
A large crowd gathered at the funeral to pay a last tribute of respect to the man they loved and honored. At the funeral, his nephew, Mr. Noble Cannon sang, "Above The Bright Blue". The remains were laid to rest in Hoosier Memorial Cemetery.
He is survived by his wfe, Mrs. Kate Cannon and three sons, Messers. Walter, Preston and Irving Cannon. He also leaves five brothers, Messers. Samuel, Burgoyne, Frank, Joseph, and William Cannon, all of Cambridge and three sisters, Mrs. Susie Travers, Mrs. Amanda Harris and Mrs. Maggie Harris all of Delaware. We Shall miss him in the home but we mourn not as those having no hope for "blessed are they who die in the Lord".

Well Known Waterman Died Thursday Night

Captain Joseph L. Cannon age 71 years, a well known and highly respected citizen died suddenly at his home 101 West End Avenue, Thursday night at 10:15 o'clock, death resulting from a heart attack. Captain Joe as he was widely known to summer vacationists and his many friends, had followed the water his entire life. For the past twenty-five years or more he had catered to and served fishing parties.In this connection he had gained an enviable reputation not only as to his ability and knowledge of the vocation, but as a gentleman of the highest caliber.
He was a devout Christian, having been a member and regular attendant of Grace M. E. Church, South for a long number of years
Mr. Cannon possessed a genial personality and was greatly admired and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a host of friends to mourn his loss.
He is survived by his wife, who was before her marriage, Miss Nora North daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. North, of this city; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Matthew Travers of Baltimore, Mrs. Samuel Harris of Jersey City, Mrs. Caleb Morgan of Cambridge, Mr. Frank Cannon of Baltimore and Mr. Burgoyne Cannon of Cambridge.
Funeral services were conducted from LeCompte Funeral Home this afternoon at two o'clock, with the Rev. Jesse H. Hobbs and Rev. James Reynolds officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery.

"INSANE MAN TRIES TO KILL HIS WIFE
Capt. William Cannon Makes Murderous Attack Upon Wife And Falls Dead A Few Minutes Later. Mind Had Become Unbalanced By Bright's Disease. Had Been Greatly Depressed For Several Weeks. Wife Has Chance For Recovery

The news of the attempt Saturday morning shortly after eight o'clock of Captain William Cannon to take the life of his wife, Mrs. Lula Condon Cannon, came as a great shock and surprise to the entire community. For several months Captain Cannon's health has been gradually failing and during that time, his mind had become seriously affected. From one of the brightest and most cheerful men to be found, one who allowed practically nothing to worry him, he had become moody and depessed and all of the bright cheerfulness had left him. He imagined that he had a great trouble and that all the members of his family had turned against him.
He had always been devoted to his wife, their congeniality and happiness having been noticeable to all who came in contact with them, and members of the family and friends frequently commented upon the fact the great happiness that usually came upon him when he entered her presence but of late he had changed and for her whom he had loved so dearly he seemed to have conceived a violent dislike, this probably being a phase of the disease which had affected his mind. The members of his family and friends had urged him to cnsult a physician but he had steadfastly refused stating that none of them could do him any good. Yesterday evening when some of the members of the family suggested that he try a physician he stated that none of them could do him any good as he was beyond their help.
During the past two weeks the ravages of the disease had been very great, he having lost about twenty pounds in weight during this time. He had also lost the jollity for which he was noted and had become quiet and morose. When he was well he sang practically all of the time, having been for years a member of the well known Cannon-Thomas quartette, but recently he has refused to sing, but while the members of the family had noticed this they did not consider him dangerous nor think there any necessity for having him committed to any institution.
Saturday morning the family arose as usual and had breakfast but about eight o'clock or a little after he suddenly grabbed his wife's hands and holding them, picked up a hatchett with which he struck her two or three blows on the head, inflicting what were at first thought to be fatal wounds but which a thorough examination by the physicians at the hospital where she was hurriedly removed, disclosed yo be not so dangerous as had been believed.
As his wife screamed for help Capt. Cannon left their home, which is located at the foot of Willis Street, and started hurriedly away. Reaching the pavement in front of the home of his brother, Captain Joseph Cannon, he fell and when picked up it was found that he was dead, his heart having failed.
That his wife was not killed seems probably due to the fact that even while imbued with the idea of taking her life he could not bring himself to strike hard enough to kill her, it being reported that the examination showed that her skull was not fractured. He was a powerful man, weighing about 230 pounds when he was in his prime and was splendidly proportioned so that to have killed her would have been easy. The whole community sympathizes deeply with the family in their trouble.
"Captain Will" as he was known to those who knew him well, was a member of a large family and besides his wife is survived by four children; Mrs. William H. Johnson, , Mrs. Clarence Jones, Mrs. Robert Dail and Mr. Noble Cannon, all of this city. He also leaves four brothers; Captain Samuel Cannon of Golden Hill, and Captains M. Burgoyne, Frank and Joseph Cannon and three sisters, Mrs. Mandy Morgan, Mrs. Samuel Harris, and Mrs. Matthew Travers, all of this city.
The funeral services will be held from his late home No. 5 Willis Street, Monday afternoon at 2 P.M.. Interment in Greenlawn cemetery."
