Ref. William R. Simpson's Civil War National Archives Pension Records: WITNESSES: 3rd -- Nimrod Goins, age 58 in 1894, laborer, resided in Athens, Ohio. "...I knew Simpson some 8 or 10 years before he went into the army (ca 1854). I then lived four miles on the other side of Amesville, Ohio, from here (near Washington County, Ohio, line) and he lived in the edge of Washington County, Ohio, about six miles from me...After the fight at Chickahominy Swamps, Virginia, in September 1864, he complained of rupture...."

1. James M. Goins, age 44 in 1889, resident of Cutler, Ohio. "A neighbor, and was in the same regiment. Was mustered about the same time."

2. Thomas Gibson, age 70 in 1915, resided at 132 Baker Street, Zanesville, Ohio, retired farmer. "...we were born in Virginia. Nimrod Goins' father was my father's brother. I had to take my mother's name because she was not married to my father. Nimrod and I were brought up together. I came to Ohio, when about 12 years old (circa 1857), Nimrod came about a year after I did. We settled down about Chesterhill, Morgan County, Ohio...he married Lucy Jackson. I knew her before he married her. Elvy Jackson, who she later divorced, then she married Nimrod Goins, about a year later, they moved up to Bartlett, Ohio, bought a small farm, 1-1/2 miles from my home. My wife died. I bached [sic] until about three years ago. Then I moved over to Nimrod Goins' place, he was getting feeble, wanted me to come and run the place for him...."

3. Mrs. Lucy A. Goins, age 55, resided at the corner of Baker and Matthews Street, 926 Cliffwood Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio. "I was born in Harmar, Washington County, Ohio. My father was Andrew Guy and my mother Ann, both now dead, two brothers are dead, one sister, Mrs. Mattie Lott, lives with me. When I was 16 to 18 I came to Zanesville, Ohio, to work out as a domestic for Judge Granger, now dead. I married William Hardy, a colored man, about 37 years ago in Zanesville. Mr. Hardy died in Zanesville about eight or nine years after our marriage, we had two children; Irene Hardy, lives at 2173 E. 25th Place, Cleveland, Ohio; and Andrew Hardy, same address. I moved to Chesterhill, Ohio, having remarried in the meantime to John Jackson, about 25 years ago, he had been married to a Jane Burgess in Pennsylvania, she died in Chesterhill some 19 years before I married John Jackson. They had the following children: Hattie Jackson, deceased, unmarried; Smith Jackson, dead; Thomas Jackson; Kate Jackson, deceased; John Jackson, died in Chesterhill, Ohio. I had no children by John Jackson. Then in six months I married Elvy J. Jackson, son of John Jackson. I got a divorce in May 18, 1903, Muskingum County, Ohio -- we had one child, Ethel Jackson, who now lives in Lorain, Ohio. Elvy's first wife died. Met Nimrod Goins at Athens County Fair. His first marriage was to Eliza "Lizette" Rogers, in Washington Co., Ohio. They had some ten or eleven children, among them, Mrs. Josephine Williams, now his guardian. Elize died in Athens, some 19 or 20 years before he married me, he was about 70 years old, Oct. 10, 1906, in Athens, Ohio. Children living in 1898, Albert Goins, will be 16 years old, September 16, 1898 (In prison, Cots [?], Ohio, [?] 1914 for three years, for carrying a revolver."

Ref. Newspaper Article (January 27, 1916) from Genealogical/Historical Society, Athens, OH: NIMROD Goins DIED LAST NIGHT WAS A VETERAN. Nimrod Goins, aged about 84 years, died last evening about 6 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Williams, Central Avenue, from the infirmities of old age. Funeral services will be held at the Williams house tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Lucas, and burial will be made in the West State Street Cemetery.

Mr. Goins was born near Charlottesville, Virginia, and came to Ohio when quite young. With the exception of a few years spent at Beverly, he had lived nearly all of his life in and about Athens. During the Civil War he served his country, enlisting in Company G, Fifth Regiment Colored Infantry, and his war record was an honorable one. Nearly thirty years ago his wife died. He leaves three sons, Albert, California, Herbert, of Canton, Albert of Columbus, and one daughter, Mrs. Williams. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Goins for many years was a highly respected citizen of this city.
