- #225 - My Family -The Belly Dancer (38 KB)
Pete Canady (my husband) being entertained by a belly dancer that we had hired for the surprise birthday party I threw for him in March 1981.Keeping this party a surprise was quite a task! The week before the party he had been at what was supposed to be a week-long meeting for his job.Ends up he breaks his leg while playing raquetball and they sent him home early. In the meantime, I had put on invitations for invitees to RSVP me at home...I had to make sure I answered every phone call that week. The day of the party I had made arrangements with some of 'the guys' to get him out of the house and not return until 9 p.m.Again, another chore because a cousin-in-law who was 'in charge' of keeping Pete away, called to say hubby was ready to come home.My response was of course, NO, and suggested that they go eat(even though I had prepared a lot of of food).Long story short, they arrived back home at the same time as belly dancer but we managed to pull it off without any further glitches. - #226 - My Family - Delta Sigma Theta (65 KB)

For several years at our Goins Family Reuion we had a pinata for the smaller chidren, usually starting with the youngest. In 1993 I announced that we would start with the oldest 'child' ... who happened to be Dad (Donald O. Goins). We blindfolded him and handed him the stick, only for him to lift the blindfold from his eyes and walk over to his workbench to sand down the stick! This photo is not of him, but one of his brothers, Wesley E. Goins.I don't recall now who broke the pinata, but it was a surprising and enjoyable time by all...especially the smaller children who got their turn laughing at the adults at their attempts to hit the swaying pinata! - #147 - My Family - Ferry Boat (35 KB)

One of the games for our Goins Family Reunion was a scavanger hunt, young & old.I would place clues inside plastic eggs, using different colored eggs for each group, then 'strategically placing' the eggs somewhere on the 5 acres at Mom & Dad's where the reunion was held. The clue inside each egg led them to their next location. This is a photo of people scurrying off to find their eggs, trying to be the 1st group to finish.(Taken in 1992) - #148 - My Family - The Arthictect (44 KB)

Canady II, at his last high school football game (Senior Night).Although Lee was not able to play football because of physical limitations, he participated with and was a member of the football time for 4 years. He went to practice every day with the team, was awarded an equipment manager plaque 4 years (something that had/has never been done), and was voted by his teammates as the MVP however he could not actually receive that award because he was not an 'active player'.He was given a moment of 'glory' with about 30 seconds left on the play clock--a complete surprise to Lee and to us when he was called out onto the playing field to 'handle' the football.Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the entire stadium that night...including players/coaches on the other team!I applaud you, Lee, for your courage and accomplshments!! - #36 - Goins Photo - Grandmother, Father & Uncles (127 KB)

Lee A. Canady II (my son) shown in 2 of his 3 casts from surgeries which ultimately lead to him being able to walk on his own.His first surgery was at age 3 when they lengthened the heel chords on both legs at the same time resulting in him being in casts up to his knees. The photo on left was taken in March 1987.The surgery performed in this photo was on both legs just below the knees. In layman terms, they cut his leg bones, rotated and pinned together, then put in casts to hold in place for healing. He was in casts for about 6 weeks. It was after this surgery that he learned to walk on without the assistance of a walker. The photo on the right is after he had hip surgery in November 1989 (the Monday before Thanksgiving) and was put in a 'body cast' for 13 weeks. Once these casts were removed, he had to learn to walk alone once again which wasn't until August of that year. The particular evening that he took those 'first steps' again was a very joyous occasion for us!Once he started walking, he wouldn't stop practicing and I had to force him to go to bed, however he wouldn't go to sleep because he said, "but Mom, I have to keep practicing!"It was after midnight before we finally got to sleep! What courage, determination, and what a remarkable blessing!!! - #46 - Goins Photo - Uncle (49 KB)

Photo taken of Dad (Donad Goins) at our surprise retirement party for him.Not only was the party a surprise, but so was one of his 'presents'.We made arrangements for my ex-sister-in-law, Jeane (Williams) Goins, to come back to MI from FL for the party. We found a box large enough for her to fit in, wrapped it and taped it shut shortly after his arrival and had him to 'open' it right away.Rather than just pulling off the tape, he said 'let me use my knife to cut the tape'.Needless to say, Jeane became nervous and started 'wiggling' to make sure she was down far enough to not get cut. When she moved, it startled Dad and he almost didn't finish opening his 'surprise' present.Taken in Lansing, MI.(1979) - #63 - Goins Photo - Uncle (24 KB)
