GOINS/McCUEN & ADAMS/STEVENS FAMILIES OF OH/WV/VA

Updated February 1, 2006

DEDICATION TO MY PARENTS:

I dedicate this site to my parents, Donald & Elizabeth (Adams) Goins, who have been very instrumental in me delving into our family genealogy. Through my father's desire to learn more information and locate where his paternal grandparents, Hiram Goins and Rebecca (Minerd) Goins were buried, I began my search for them. We have been successful in locating the cemetery for my great-grandmother, however my great-grandfather's resting place yet remains a mystery.

On the other hand, my mother knew her paternal and maternal grandparents, which brings me to my Adams/Stevens lines. My research for these families has been much easier as my mother, maternal grandmother, Ethel M. (Stevens) Adams as well as my great-aunt, Mertie (Mayle) Adams, had made numerous recordings in their Bibles. They also kept scrapbooks with obituaries, newspaper clippings, and handwritten notes. Unfortunately I never knew Grandma Adams as she passed away prior to my birth. I did know, and admired, Aunt Mertie and wish now, today, that I had been more interested in genealogy during her lifetime as she had a wealth of information that would have made this project a little easier.

Dad will be 82 this year (2003), Mom will be 78 on her next birthday, and both have very vivid memories of their relatives which helps to make this project a little easier. I, too, remember both paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather, we well as many of my great aunts and uncles.

I would like to thank my parents for teaching me the value of "family" at an early age and for supporting me in putting together this collection of our family history. More importantly, I thank you for being loving parents. I love you, Mom & Dad.

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

While researching for my ancestors I have made contact with several distant relatives. Two of those individuals are connected through my Adams line. They have become very dear to me and I will cherish our newly found kinship forever. I wish to thank them for all their assistance, guidance and most recently their almost daily "nagging" to get this site up and running. Because of the two of you this page has now become a reality. A lot of work still needs to be done, but finally, the foundation has been laid. Thanks, Cuz Denise & Cuz Art.

PATERNAL LINES: GOINS/McCUEN

My father, Donald O. Goins, is the son of Jesse Floyd Goins and Reatha Arcelia (McCuen) Goins. My grandmother was married to Frank Spires prior to her marriage to my grandfather. There were 2 children from my grandmother's first marriage, and 11 from the marriage to my grandfather. Ten of the 13 are still living, as well as 9 of the spouses. These 13 children collectively had 74 children and 68 are still living. I've lost track and stopped counting the number of children in the generations that follow.

MATERNAL LINES: ADAMS/STEVENS

My mother, Elizabeth (Adams) Goins, was from a much smaller family. Her father, James Lewis Adams, Jr., had also been married prior to the marriage to my grandmother, Ethel Mabel (Stevens) Adams. His first wife died a little more than a year after my uncle's birth. My grandfather then married my grandmother and had 2 children: a son who died a few weeks after his birth, and my mother. I have no first cousins on this side, but many, many more distantly related cousins, aunts and uncles.

I've provided you with a basic background of my family. Now I'll stop 'talking' and let you read more about my ancestors, as well as view the large selection of family photos dating from the late 1800's to the present.

ENJOY!!! Irita

  • #225 - My Family - The Belly Dancer (38 KB)
Pete Canady (my husband) being entertained by a belly dancer that we had hired for the surprise birthday party I threw for him in March 1981. Keeping this party a surprise was quite a task! The week before the party he had been at what was supposed to be a week-long meeting for his job. Ends up he breaks his leg while playing raquetball and they sent him home early. In the meantime, I had put on invitations for invitees to RSVP me at home...I had to make sure I answered every phone call that week. The day of the party I had made arrangements with some of 'the guys' to get him out of the house and not return until 9 p.m. Again, another chore because a cousin-in-law who was 'in charge' of keeping Pete away, called to say hubby was ready to come home. My response was of course, NO, and suggested that they go eat (even though I had prepared a lot of of food). Long story short, they arrived back home at the same time as belly dancer but we managed to pull it off without any further glitches.

  • #228 - My Family - Big Kids' Pinata (66 KB)
For several years at our Goins Family Reuion we had a pinata for the smaller chidren, usually starting with the youngest. In 1993 I announced that we would start with the oldest 'child' ... who happened to be Dad (Donald O. Goins). We blindfolded him and handed him the stick, only for him to lift the blindfold from his eyes and walk over to his workbench to sand down the stick! This photo is not of him, but one of his brothers, Wesley E. Goins. I don't recall now who broke the pinata, but it was a surprising and enjoyable time by all...especially the smaller children who got their turn laughing at the adults at their attempts to hit the swaying pinata!

  • #229 - My Family - Scavanger Hunt (87 KB)
One of the games for our Goins Family Reunion was a scavanger hunt, young & old. I would place clues inside plastic eggs, using different colored eggs for each group, then 'strategically placing' the eggs somewhere on the 5 acres at Mom & Dad's where the reunion was held. The clue inside each egg led them to their next location. This is a photo of people scurrying off to find their eggs, trying to be the 1st group to finish. (Taken in 1992)

  • #198 - My Family - High School Football (9 KB)
Proud parents (me & husband) being escorted by our son, Lee A. Canady II, at his last high school football game (Senior Night). Although Lee was not able to play football because of physical limitations, he participated with and was a member of the football time for 4 years. He went to practice every day with the team, was awarded an equipment manager plaque 4 years (something that had/has never been done), and was voted by his teammates as the MVP however he could not actually receive that award because he was not an 'active player'. He was given a moment of 'glory' with about 30 seconds left on the play clock--a complete surprise to Lee and to us when he was called out onto the playing field to 'handle' the football. Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the entire stadium that night...including players/coaches on the other team! I applaud you, Lee, for your courage and accomplshments!!

  • #208 - My Family - The Road to Recovery (63 KB)
Lee A. Canady II (my son) shown in 2 of his 3 casts from surgeries which ultimately lead to him being able to walk on his own. His first surgery was at age 3 when they lengthened the heel chords on both legs at the same time resulting in him being in casts up to his knees. The photo on left was taken in March 1987. The surgery performed in this photo was on both legs just below the knees. In layman terms, they cut his leg bones, rotated and pinned together, then put in casts to hold in place for healing. He was in casts for about 6 weeks. It was after this surgery that he learned to walk on without the assistance of a walker. The photo on the right is after he had hip surgery in November 1989 (the Monday before Thanksgiving) and was put in a 'body cast' for 13 weeks. Once these casts were removed, he had to learn to walk alone once again which wasn't until August of that year. The particular evening that he took those 'first steps' again was a very joyous occasion for us! Once he started walking, he wouldn't stop practicing and I had to force him to go to bed, however he wouldn't go to sleep because he said, "but Mom, I have to keep practicing!" It was after midnight before we finally got to sleep! What courage, determination, and what a remarkable blessing!!!

We found a box large enough for her to fit in, wrapped it and taped it shut shortly after his arrival and had him to 'open' it right away. Rather than just pulling off the tape, he said 'let me use my knife to cut the tape'. Needless to say, Jeane became nervous and started 'wiggling' to make sure she was down far enough to not get cut.
