Operated a tavern, or inn, on the post road between Nashville and Knoxville in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Among regular guests of the inn was Andrew Jackson, who at that time was a prominent attorney and made regular trips between the two cities conducting his law practice.
In 1829 made trip to Illinois, without his family, perhaps in search of his parents who had gone there severals years earlier. Then he returned to Tennessee, disposed of his tavern etc. and set out with his family in spring of 1830 to Illinois.
After the winter of 1830-31 (known in Illinois history as the "Winter of the Deep Snow") and the following summer which was wet and cold a killing frost came in September 12th which damaged the few acres of corn to such an extent it was worthless for food or seed. There was a lot of cholera in Greene County and the Black Hawk war was going on north of there. The Cannedy family was discouraged and returned to Tennessee and stayed until 1834.
In 1834 they returned to Illinois , traveling in ox cart and on foot. it was during this trip that one daughter, Julia, fell from the cart and broke her hip, which caused to her to be a cripple for life.
