Notes for Thomas Stanton: Thomas helped establish the town of Stonington, CT. In his youth in England, he was educated as a cadet but didn't like the military and instead took a deep interest in the religious principles of the migrating Puritans. He immigrated to America in 1635 on the "Bonaventure", landing in Virginia. He immediately left for Boston, mingling with the Indians on the way and learning their language and customs. After reaching Boston, he was hired as an Indian language interpreter for a conference with the Pequot Indians in Saybrook, CT. After the conference, he set up a house in Hartford, CT in 1637. He became an invaluable interpreter for the government of CT though he often disagreed with the way the Indians were treated. He often spoke his mind and followed his convictions which caused the government to withhold his pay at times. He became a close friend of CT Governor Winthrop. In 1650, he erected a trading house in the Pawcatuck Valley in Stonington, CT. Vessels came down the Pawcatuck River to trade with him. The ships cruised along the New England coast purchasing furs from Indians and products from planters and selling them in Boston or the West Indies. He also aided missionaries in translating Christian texts for the Indians. He was also elected to almost every public office in Pawcatuck and eventually became representative to the General Court of CT from 1666-1675.
