Valentine Wightman (son of George Wightman and Elizabeth Updike) was born Apr 16, 1681 in Quidnessett, Washington County, Rhode Island, and died Jun 07, 1747 in Groton, New London, Connecticut. He married (1) Susanna Holmes on Feb 10, 1702/03 in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. He married (2) Joanna ?? on 1728 in Groton, New London, Connecticut.
Notes for Valentine Wightman: As a young man in Kingstowne, RI, he was active in public affairs. He was involved in a political riot on April 22, 1700 along with his brother John and several cousins. The penalty, a fine, was suspended because the offenders had scattered. He was an outstanding member of the Free Will Baptist Church in Kingstowne and he soon became a minister. His brother Daniel was also a Baptist minister.
He moved from Rhode Island to Groton, CT in 1705 at the invitation of an association called the "Dissenters." He established the first Baptist Church in CT. Valentine's sons, Timothy and John, became Baptist ministers. In 1724, Valentine established a church in New York City.
