George Wightman (son of John Wightman and Ruth ??) was born Nov 04, 1632 in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England, and died Jan 07, 1721/22 in Quidnessett, Washington County, Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth Updike on 1663 in Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island, daughter of Gilbert Updike and Katherine Smith.
Notes for George Wightman: George immigrated with his father and wife from England to Newport, Rhode Island in 1654. They settled on a farm north of Wickford near North Kingstown where they had 5 sons and 3 daughters. The land they purchased was handed down intact through 6 generations and was known as the Wightman homestead for more than 200 years. In 1660, George was arrested during some land disputes and was taken to Hartford, CT because of his allegiance to the Rhode Island government and Providence Plantations. In 1671, he was one of those who signed an Oath of Allegiance to Rhode Island. On May 6, 1673, he was elected a freeman of the Kings Province. In 1686, he was elected constable. He eventually owned 2000 acres.
