"Edgar enrolled at age of 18 in Wellsville, NY mustered in Dec. 10, 1861 at Elmira, NY, wit5h the 64th NY Foot Vol. (Infantry). He was in three known major battles, Antietam Sept 17, 1862; Chancellorsville 1865, and Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. He was wounded three times: a minnie ball in check, grazed across his back from a cannon ball that killed the m;an next to him, and a bullet hit his coat button and buised his abdoman. He was a single sawyer and a farmer. "

Served in New York Infantry 64th Regiment commanded by Captain J. S. Pittenger. Enrolled October 19, 1861. Discharged at Alexandria VA on the 6th day of December 1862. description in 15 Aug 1879 was age 36, height 5 ft 6 in, complexion light, hair brown, eyes blue. While in the line of his duty at Camp California in the State of Virginia on or about the 15th day of Dec 1861, he contracted Disease of the throat and lungs by reason of exposure, and while in the line of his duty at Harrison Landing, VA on or about the 15th day of July 1862 he received an injury to the spine, caused by falling while carrying water. Treated in Hospital at Newport News, VA and by Regimental Surgeon. Occupation Shingle Sawing (shingle packing).
"I resided from 1856 to about 1887 at Pikeville Allegany County, New York, from there I removed to near Wellsville Allegany Co. New York and remained there working in I. W. Fassetts Shingle Mill until about 1859 when I conmmensed work for Wm Johnson in the same place and continued to work for said Johnson until my enlistment in the United States service in 1861. When I returned from the United States service as soon as I was able to begin work I commenced work for I. W. Fassett of Wellsville NY I worked for him about three months and they again went to work for Wm. G. Johnson and worked for said Johnson about two years. From here I went to Dalamansa NY and worked six months for Caleb Gardner and then returned to Wellsville Allegany Co. NY. worked for A. A. Goodliff about three months. From here I went to Rouseville Venango Co. PA and worked at running an engine and tool dressing for drilling an oil well for about one year. I then returned to Wellsville Allegany Co. NY and sawed shingles for Jerry Halsey about nine months from Wellsville I went to the Eleven Mile Potter Co., PA and sawed shingles for Martin Johnson about one year and three months. I then returned to Wellsville, NY and again sawed shingles for Jerry Halsey for about 5 months, and for A. A. Goody for about 9 months. I then moved to East Hebron, Potter Co., PA and worked for Leonard Davis Shingle sawing for about five months. I then sawed for H. D. Woodard and brother two or three months. I then worked on a farm for six or seven months. I then went to sawing shingles for I. H. Reaser and worked for him about eight months. I then sawed for J. E. Terwilleger and worked for him nearly one year. I then went to Sharon Center, Potter Co., PA and sawed shingles for John Rockfeller for about six months. I then returned to East Hebron in 1872 and sawed shingles for Furnum Brown & Dwight about fifteen months. Since this time 1872, I have resided at East Hebron, Potter Co. PA and sawed shingles at the shingle Mills at said place until about 1874, since that time I have followed the occupation of a farmer."
Supporting letters from James W. Alton and James Mesler described the injury occuring by Edgar going for water to a spring about a mile from camp that lay under a very steep bank. He missed his footing and fell causing the injury to his back. In a sworn statement by William Kimball, it was stated that Edgar M. Bly while in the line of his duty at Elmira, NY did become disabled by reason of bronchitis which disabled him .....

Declaration for an original Invalid pension.
"On this 15 day of Aug 1879...edgar M. Bly age 36 years...who enrolled on the 19th day of October 1861, in company G of the 64th regiment of NY Inf. commanded by Captain J. S. Pittenger and was honorably discharged near Alexandria Va on the 6th day of December 1862, that his personal description is as follows: age 36, height 5 ft 6 in, complexion, light, hair brown, eyes blue.
