John Carpenter is the first of the Carpenters who can be found in English historical records. He was a member of parliament in 1323.

From The Carpenter Family News-Journal Dec 1971:

John Carpenter of Leskard (Liskeard), Cornwall, born prior to 1300; member of Parliament in 1323, during reign of Edward I, from borough of Leskard. John believed of Norman descent as Leskard, a charter town, was settled by Normans; the Celts were not urban settlers. (Harry Rogers says "there is no proof John is father of Richard, below, but Raymond Carpenter says the relationship is given in four printed sources; documentation needed.)
