First created: 7th August 1999 WHAT'S NEW? Simon David Carruthers (my 3rd cousin once removed) and great great grandson of Samuel Thomson Carruthers contacted me late last year and provided some useful updates on his close relatives. Contact has continued with Linda Jean Reid (nee Archer) who lives in Vancouver and is a Prior descendant. Russell Watt (my cousin) visited and helped to update the Watt branch. I have recently identified all of the uncles and aunts of my Aunt Judy (wife of Peter Osborne Carruthers). RECENT BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES Born 17 October 2004 – Laura Kate FISHER (1st cousin twice removed) to Simon Michael and Sarah Anne at Auckland N Z. Died 30 July 2004 – John Robert CARRUTHERS (my 3rd cousin) wife of Rosfita (Rosa) Herlina and father of Robert Michael Bonar, Victoria Margaret Mutiara and David James Rory, died at the age of 59 in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Married 4 April 2004 – Paul CARRUTHERS (my nephew) to Johanna Sara-Maree (Joey) HALL at Wellington N Z. (We had the pleasure of attending this special occasion). Born 29 March 2004 – Ruba Lily CARRUTHERS (my grandniece) to Andrew Robert and Anna at Wellington N Z. Born 9 March 2004 – James Alexander SIMPSON (my wife’s great nephew) to Matthew John and Renee Megan (nee JOELS) at Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Died 4 November 2003 - Thomas Edward PRIOR (my wife’s Half granduncle) father of June PILLINGER, died at the age of 91 in Wiltshire, England. Born 29 September 2003 – Daniel James GOODWIN (my 1st cousin once removed) to Nicholas James and Sarah Jane (nee CARRUTHERS) at Blackbrook, Staffs., England. Please let me know of any other events in 2004 that I have not caught up with yet. ***************************************************************** James Carruthers (c.1773-1844) resided at Linnet Hall (a cottage on the estate of Stewart of Southwick) in the parish of Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland with his daughter Agnes, son Robert and Robert's wife and family. After Robert's death in 1861, his wife Jane (nee Wilson), half-sister Agnes and seven of the eight children emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand. All but a few of Robert's descendants (including myself) currently live in various parts of New Zealand. I am the sixth generation of this family and my lineage is as follows: 1. James (c.1773-1844) (No.1) married Mary McROBERT (1774-c.1805) 2. Robert (1803-1861) (No.3) married Jane WILSON (1816-1905) 3. Robert (1856-1929) (No.9), at the age of 11, travelled to Dunedin with his Mother and others on the "Silistria" arriving 24 August 1867. Married Mary GRANT (1862-1944) - Mary was born in NZ after her father Peter GRANT had left Scotland in 1844 arriving in Dunedin, NZ around 1853, via Sydney Australia. Their family story is told in " The Grant Family Saga" a limited edition published in the mid 1960's. 4. David Robert (1896-1979)(No.22) fought in the first Battle of the Somme and other campaigns of the Great War before returning to N Z. Married Mary Ruby Rose EVANS (1897-1992) who was born in Stafford, England although the family lived in Kent, England. 5. Alan Robert (1921-1990) (No.51) married Mavis Francis Beatrice WATT (1923-1994) - Mavis was born in Auckland, N Z but was descended from a family of blacksmiths in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland. 6. David (1947) (No.115) married Caroline Jeanne TURNBULL (1951)- Caroline was born in London, England. 7. Our two sons - Nicholas (1977) and Martin (1980) [The reference numbers above indicate where each person is located in the "Genealogy Report: Descendants of James Carruthers".] |
