WHAT'S NEW?

Simon David Carruthers (my 3rd cousin once removed) and great great grandson of Samuel Thomson Carruthers contacted me late last year and provided some useful updates on his close relatives.

Contact has continued with Linda Jean Reid (nee Archer) who lives in Vancouver and is a Prior descendant. Russell Watt (my cousin) visited and helped to update the Watt branch. I have recently identified all of the uncles and aunts of my Aunt Judy (wife of Peter Osborne Carruthers).

*****************************************************************

James Carruthers (c.1773-1844) resided at Linnet Hall (a cottage on the estate of Stewart of Southwick) in the parish of Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland with his daughter Agnes, son Robert and Robert's wife and family.

After Robert's death in 1861, his wife Jane (nee Wilson), half-sister Agnes and seven of the eight children emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand. All but a few of Robert's descendants (including myself) currently live in various parts of New Zealand.

I am the sixth generation of this family and my lineage is as follows:

1. James (c.1773-1844) (No.1) married Mary McROBERT (1774-c.1805)

2. Robert (1803-1861) (No.3) married Jane WILSON (1816-1905)

3. Robert (1856-1929) (No.9), at the age of 11, travelled to Dunedin with his Mother and others on the "Silistria" arriving 24 August 1867. Married Mary GRANT (1862-1944) - Mary was born in NZ after her father Peter GRANT had left Scotland in 1844 arriving in Dunedin, NZ around 1853, via Sydney Australia. Their family story is told in " The Grant Family Saga" a limited edition published in the mid 1960's.

4. David Robert (1896-1979)(No.22) fought in the first Battle of the Somme and other campaigns of the Great War before returning to N Z. Married Mary Ruby Rose EVANS (1897-1992) who was born in Stafford, England although the family lived in Kent, England.

5. Alan Robert (1921-1990) (No.51) married Mavis Francis Beatrice WATT (1923-1994) - Mavis was born in Auckland, N Z but was descended from a family of blacksmiths in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland.

6. David (1947) (No.115) married Caroline Jeanne TURNBULL (1951)- Caroline was born in London, England.

7. Our two sons - Nicholas (1977) and Martin (1980)
