8. Obituary, Virden Empire Advance, Walter Frederick Carruthers - The death of Walter Frederick Carruthers occured at Virden District Hospital on February 19, 1973, following a brief illness. He was in his 75th year. Mr. Carruthers was born at Kinsmore, Manitoba, and lived there for four years. He moved to Hargrave in 1902 and farmed one mile west of the villiage until hi retirement. On March 20, 1920 he married Lorena Evelyn Brimacombe. They moved to their present home in Virden in December 1965. Mr. Carruthers was keenly interested in sports particularily baseball and curling.. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and of the United Church. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Lorena Evelyn of Virden, one son, Orne Ross of Virden, two sisters, Mrs. B. L. Jelly and Mrs. I. Brimacombe, both of Winnipeg, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Orvil in 1963. The funeral service was held in St. Paul's United Church on February 23 with Rev. K. Bauman officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Carefoot, Cliff Sawyer, James Odell, William White, Jas. Stinson and Wm. Bond. Active Pallbearers were Alvin Odell, Chas. Milne, Donald Odell, Ed Page, Lloyd Robinson and Harold Waines. Internment was in Virden Cemetery. G.R. Carscadden Funeral Chapels were in charge of arrangements. .
