This branch of the CARPENTER family has been traced back to 1825 in Canada by family tradition. I am looking to verify John Carpenter's parents who may have lived in St. Sylvestre, Lotbiniere County, Quebec from 1821. I have good reason to believe that his parents were Nicholas Carpenter and Sally King born in North Waterboro, Maine. John Carpenter had many brothers by family tradition and "left" the family farm at age 14 with 5 dollars and a horse. His brothers may have been Josiah, Orin, William, Oliver, Freeman and Dimon. John Carpenter, b. 1825, my great-great grandfather, first appeared in the U.S.census of 1850 in the household of Priscilla Higgins of Trenton,Maine and was listed as a farmer. He soon married Rachel Rogers and in later censuses never revealed his parents or birthplace correctly. I would like to find the descendants of John's brothers. From a book by Amos Bugbee Carpenter, it seems that Freeman moved to Marlett, Michigan and was the last to leave Quebec. He eventually went to live with Nicholas John Carpenter, in Tippecanoe county, Indiana. William resided in Andrews, Indiana, and Dimon Luther moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. |
