(LAFAYETTE) Service for Merle Abner, 88, of LaFayette were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Revs. G. K. Abner and Ricky Emery officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Abner died Thursday, Aug. 30, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley. He was born in Clay County on April 25, 1913, son of William David Abner and Viola Ovelta Holloway Abner. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a professional singer with the Swanee River Boys and was a Baptist byfaith. Survivors include five sisters, Alma Abner of Roanoke, Novella Bradley, Geneva Emery and Lora A. Childers, all of Wedowee, and Willie Webb of Valley; and two brothers, Thomas Braxton Abner of Huguley and Buford Abner of Wedowee. Pallbearers were John Abner, Dave Bradley, Ronnie Yates, Mike McCormick, Larry Bradley, Jerry Rice and Buford Abner.
