Family on page 781 (#1669) The history of Orange county, NY mentions John Carpenter as being one of the first settlers of Goshen, NY. AND this John must have been a son of William of Hempstead, as a John Carpenter of Goshen sold Daniel, the son of William, the third of land given by William of Hempstead to his son John. John Carpenter of Goshen, Orange county, NY sold land to Daniel Carpenter of Hempstead, LI on April 5, 1751: thus showing conclusively that John and Daniel were the sons of William and that John went to Goshen at an early day. !Will dated 17 Sept 1767 and proven 27 June 1787 signed in Blooming Grove, NY. Will mentions wife, Rachel, sons Elijah and William, Grandson Matthew. The two sons were made executors of the will. !Only six children listed for family in the CM and CARFHJ. See notes for his son, Elijah. |

Notes for Daniel Carpenter: [rehobtothomas.ftw] !Number 89 on page 62 in the CARPENTER MEMORIAL. Family on page 86 (#50) !Daniel married Sarah or Margaret Hall in 1752 and purchased a large farm in Duchess county, NY in 1753 and died there. His will divides his property amongst his nine children. !Daniel was the first of this family who settled in Duchess county. He became a resident of Crom elbow precinct in 1752, having purchased land in the Great Nine Partners upon which he resided until his death in 1777. !Daniel was married at least twice. Once about 1729 and then in 1752. He probably married sisters. IE Sarah AND Margaret. |

It is evident that Joseph, brother of Samuel and Benjamin, settled in and about Goshen, NY as he and his son were assessed in 1775: also a Ruth Carpenter. It is evident that Joseph Jr. was over 21 years of age in 1775. !Joseph's will was dated 17 Oct 1789 and proven 20 Dec 1797. It mentions sons; Jesse, Colvill, Joseph (Jr.), John & Benjamin. Daughter: Christina, grandson Henry Young. !The Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal (1995) Vol. 5, No. 9, p. 552 - indicates he had 11 children. Coleville, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Jesse, Keziah, Sarah, Christian, Ruth, Elizabeth and Susan. |

Benjamin of Goshen mentions in his will wife Mary; sons Benjamin, Gilbert and Samuel: daughters Sarah, Mary and Rhoda: loving cousin Samuel Carpenter one of the executors. (dated) Feb. 23, 1764. (proved) Oct. 10, 1767. Probably three children not named were not living when the will was made. His widow, Mary, was still residing in Goshen in 1775. |

Notes for John Carpenter: [rehobtothomas.ftw] !Number 95 in the Carpenter Memorial. Page 63 Family is on page 91 (#54). He moved to Goshen. A Carpenter Abstract of his will: "Mentions wife Elizabeth, sons John, Wait: daughter Rebecca: brothers Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin and Timothy. Joseph Carpenter, Benjamin Carpenter & Wait Smith, Jr., executors (dated) Jan. 29, 1738-9, (proved) Dec 1, 1740" In the will of John Gale of Goshen, dated Oct 10, 1760, mention is made of land of Timothy Carpenter as a boundary to his property. So we find that these five brothers were all located closely, and progenitors of the numerous family of the name in that part of the state. !AFN RSDD-1H (b. 1700) SCS1-K4 (b. 1701) and NXGC-48 (b. 1702) are listed in the AF. These are probably duplicates or one was a child that died as a infant. It is unknown at this time which is which. Thus only one child shown in this record. !AFN TRR4-LG same father different mother seems incorrect. This John given to first mother. TRR4-LG is a different individual from the following AFNs: AFN RSDD-1H (b. 1700), SCS1-K4 (b. 1701) and NXGC-48 (b. 1702) are listed in the AF. These are probably duplicates or one was a child that died as a infant. |
