Went to Winhall and found some things. After searching all over for Asa K. and thinking the middle initial might be Knight I discovered I was searching for the wrong Asa . I went back over the census records for 1850 Guilford in which he was mentioned for the first time. I noticed that the woman above him was Hannah, and discovered that the middle initial was a H, and not a K. In the 1870 census for Winhall, John checked the column that said his father was foreign born!!! During all this time Lewis Elijah, and ASa keep alternating going from using first names to middle names. I noticed that in the regimental recordings for the civil war in which John Draper and Lewis e. served there was also a Henry A., so I sent for Henry A's war records. There was also a Henry A. in Winhall in 1870 at the same time that John and Lewis were there.(Could this be Henry Asa?) Lewis E.'s first wife was Sarah A. Shepardson, daughter of Martin Shepardson of Guilford. I found her grave in the Wilkens Hill cemetery along with 2 babies that died. Lewis E. went back to Green River(Wilkens Hill cemetery) after getting out of the civil was, and first applied there for pension. Sarah A. died in 1866. Lewis E. (first born of John/ Lois) was born in Leyden, Mass in 1830. I believe that he was born in Leyden because Lois went home to her Father's home in Leyden so that her mother (Lydia Gallup) could help her have the baby. As Elijah was in Leyden Mass in the 1830 census. I also found Lewis E. in the 1880 census with his second wife Charlotte Wood. E in Civil War My wife and I spent 8 days in Vermont in early September looking for John and Lois's graves to no avail. The only good thing is we have eliminated a lot of places where there are not!!!!!! We have checked all townships in Bennington county except Rupert, Dorset, Peru, and Landgrove. We have checked the following townships in Windham county Wilmington, Putney, Dover, Stratton, Marlboro, and Wardsboro. Will go back and check the rest out next spring when the weather is better. Received the Military records of Lewis E. Carpenter, son of John and Lois. Like John Draper he was wounded in the civil war in the battle at Cedar Creek in Virginia. He received a gunshot wound and he could never walk again. He was discharged Aug 5, 1865. He applied for disability pension 23 Sept 1865. At the time he was age 35, and living in Green River, Windham cty, VT. He was in Troupsburg, Steuben County, NY on Dec 31, 1880. On April 16, 1878 Charlotte M. Wood (Lewis's second wife) applied for an increase of disability pension. Their address was Woodhull, Steuben county, NY Lewis E. Carpenter died on Oct 1, 1884. His wife Charlotte remarried almost immediately to Seymour Lindsley & lived in Lawsville (creek or center) Susquehanna, Pa. Her address when she applied for pension in Dec 1884 was Ulysses, Pa I went back through my census records and found something funny. In the 1860 census Newfane, county of Windham, Post office Woodford. Living with John & Lois were the children, but they were all called by their middle name and ages match. Elijah, age 30 (Lewis E. Carpenter) Draper, age 16 (John Draper) Jeanett, age 18 (Mary J.) Lydia, age 11 (Lydia Lorne) Charles, age 5, (I believe this is Lewis E's son by his first wife) I don't know if she died from childbirth or whatever. I'm going over to Steuben county this week to look for his grave. His military records say he was born in Leyden, Mass John and Lois must have been there or Lois went back home to have the baby with her mother. Guessing!!!! I will inform you of any other info I come across. The legislature also required periodic publication of tables from the reports. . . . Historically, the information contained on vital records has served as an important tool for public health officials and others by providing a picture of the general health of the population. Recognizing its importance, in 1896 the Legislature transferred responsibility for the vital statistics system to the newly formed Board of Health, the forerunner of the Vermont Department of Health. The Health Department still has this responsibility. The current Vermont vital statistics system includes six types of vital events: births, deaths, marriages, divorces, fetal deaths, and abortions." End quotation Prior to mandatory registration, all registration of b, m and d were voluntary. When a farmer or logger came to town for supplies, and if he happened to meet the town clerk, and if he were willing to do so, he reported events which happened since the last time he met the clerk, often many years previously. When the farmer/logger came to town he also often visited the local tavern to catch up on gossip. Assuming the farmer/logger and town clerk were sober, the record of events could be reasonably accurate.
