Notes for S
AM THOMPSON:
[May13also.FTW]

I received the death date of Samuel Thompson from Emily Goodwin Julian daughter of Lily Margaret Arledge

History of Adair and Guthrie Counties, Iowa", Continental Historical Company, Springfield Ill. 1884 page 611. "John Thompson was born in Chatham county, North Carolina, July 18, 1829. He is the son of James and Polly (Mann) Thompson. James Thompson was a native of North Carolina, and his father was born in Ireland". (sic: meaning Samuel Thompson)

1820 Chatham County N.C. Census

Samuel Thompson Census numbers - - - 1 1 1 - - - - 1 - 1

This means that in 1820 living in the household of a Samuel Thompson there is one male age 15-20, one male aged 20-30, one male aged 30-40, one female aged 20-30, and one female aged 40 to 50. This record was very faded and hard to read. This is really my best guess as to the occupants of this household and their ages.

From Chatham County 1771-1971 by Hadley, Horton and Strowd.
Chapter "Early Families and Outstanding People"

England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany, in the main, furnished early settlers in Chatham County. Generally speaking, they came overland from Pennsylvania, sometimes pausing in Virginia, into the upper regions of the county, and up the Cape Fear River from the eastern shore of the state..... In 1750, was a viritual wilderness and within a span of 40 years, gained a population of over 9,000.

Children of S
AM THOMPSON and MARGARET WARD are:
  i.   NANCY2 THOMPSON1.
  Notes for NANCY THOMPSON:
[May13also.FTW]

Using IGI, I found a "Nancy Thompson" born 4 4 1796 in North Carolina. This Nancy died 10 23 1862 in Salem, Washington County, Indiana. She married twice; Isaiah Hornaday on 3 3 1813 and John T. Littell on 4-10-1843. No other information available. The birth and death dates sound plausible. Leaving North Carolina for Indiana was the pattern for some other Thompson ancestors also.

  ii.   MOSES JOSHUA THOMPSON1, b. 1782, Chatham Co, North Carolina1; m. MARY STINSON1,2,3, Abt. 1808, Chatham co North Carolina4; b. Abt. 1786, Chatham, North Carolina5.

I found on a listing of the settlers to the Ohio River Valley. There is a Moses Thompson listed in 1820 living in the Ohio River Valley county of Washington, in Indiana. Later in my listings a Mary Stinson is written. This could be our relations or not.... at this point no way to tell.

  Notes for MARY STINSON:
[May13also.FTW]

In the 1840 Chatham Co NC Census I found a Mary Stinson. I do not know if this is the Mary Stinson who married Moses Joshua Thompson.

Mary is HOH:

One male child under age 5; one female child under age 5; one female 5-10 years; one 15-20; and one female 30-40; there are 75 Slaves or free persons of Color. Three white people can not read or write.
HOH means head of household.

2. iii.   SARAH THOMPSON, b. Abt. 1784, N.C..
3. iv.   JAMES THOMPSON, b. 1798, Chatham Co. N.C.; d. May 1876, Iowa.
4. v.   SAMUEL THOMPSON, b. Abt. 1799.
  vi.   RACHEL THOMPSON8, b. Abt. 18228; m. CAMPBELL8, Abt. 18428; b. Abt. 18228.
  Notes for RACHEL THOMPSON:
[May13also.FTW]

Using the state indexes at Clayton Library, I found a Rachel Campbell age 50 in the 1870 Census Index. I believe that she was living in Meckenburg County.

  Notes for CAMPBELL:
[May13also.FTW]

I have looked in the 1850 NC Census for the counties Chatham and Randolph for this Campbell.
