James F. Thompson was born in Indiana, on April 21, 1854, and is the son of John and Synthia J. (Coward) Thompson, natives of North Carolina. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1855, and settled in Thompson township. He lived with his parents until he was twenty-eight years of age, when he purchased eighty acres of land, which he rented until 1882, when he was married to Miss Jennie Sawderson, and in the fall of the same year moved to his present location. The have one child--Eva. His entire farm is fenced and improved and has an orchard of about an acre. His farm is nicely situated, and owing to his care and work has made it one of the beat farms in the township.

29. ADAM PINKNEY⁴ THOMPSON (SAMUEL³, SAMUEL², SAM¹)⁸¹ was born 1849⁸¹, and died 1930⁸¹. He married SUSAN ELIZABETH EDWARDS⁸¹ 1878⁸¹, daughter of JAMES EDWARDS and GRACEY TEEL. She was born 1858 in Chatham Co. N.C.⁸¹.

After his older brother when off to war and his father died young, Adam was only 14 when he had to assume a father/provider's role in the family.

He was a large man who wore a full beard and used a cane in his latter years due to arthritis in his knees.
All very hard working...look at those 3 careers. The family grew everything they ate, they made everything they wore, right down to knitting their own socks. Times were hard.

Adam had an abiding love of the land. After his mother died, he brought as much land as he could that was for sale... the extra shares of the homeplace from siblings, neighbor "McDaniel's" property + timber tract. Was highest bidder for
Bettie's father-in-law estate in 1885 in Chatham Co. Adam did well for himself and his children.
