The second paragraph of the article starts with: "The grandfather of our subject..."(It goes on detailing info that applies to John and not his grandfather. This is an error.)
John left home at age 13 (1837) "to work for himself". He worked for a neighbor for 1 year (1838) and then began learning the trade as a carpenter. Served a 9 year apprenticeship (1847). Then he went to NY state and worked in a "pinery and hewed timber and frames".
He "lumbered" up and down the Ohio River to Cincinnati until he was 19 (!843) and then went to Iowa City, IA and worked on the construction of the territorial capitol. He returned home to PA for 6 months and then went to Mississippi and worked for "one season" (1845 or 46).
He then went north to Galena and worked at his trade for 4 seasons (1850). Then he went to the upper Wisconsin River and helped build a sawmill "and was in that country three years, working at his trade and dealing in lumber". During this time, he rafted a lot of lumber down to St. Louis.
In 1850 he went to Mt. Carroll, IL and worked as a contractor and builder for 9 years "and was connected with the lumber-yards"(1859).
Then he moved to Elizabeth, IL (1860 census above) and worked for 6 months and went back to Wisconsin where he farmed "and worked at his trade until 1865" and then came to Jo Daviess, IL and farmed and worked as a carpenter.
He lived in Freeport for several years as a general agent and moved to Lena in 1877 and worked as a carpenter until 1886 when he leased the White House which he managed until he retired.
Sandwiched in among all this he enlisted in the Civil War while he was in WI in Co. F 37th Wis. Vol. Inf., but his time served was brief as he contracted a disability while in the service. He was discharged at Camp Randall in the fall of 1864.

FREEPORT JOURNAL STANDARD issue of Mar. 25, 1886, PP 4, Col 6:
States John took possession of White House from Cal Spellman.

Civil war pension files show John enlisted for 3 years at Madison, WI on Mar 10, 1864 as a private in Capt. A.A.Burnetts' company. He was discharged Aug 3, 1864. On his declaration for an invalid pension, he states he was discharged due to a valvular disease of the heart and was suffering disease of the heart, kidneys and back at the time of his application, July 7, 1890.
The majority of the file I received consists of investigations, affadavits, etc to verify whether or not he had a heart condition at time of discharge.
The affadavits were from Donald McKenzie, Maria Atchison, Marcus Flack, E.M. Lord and Job Kyle of Platteville, WI. None of their affadavits supported his claim of heart disease.

Obituary in LENA STAR quotes Freeport paper. John died at his daughter's home in Freeport. States he came west about 1842 and resided in Freeport. He was disabled at the end of a year and returned to Freeport. He then moved to Lena and ran a hotel: White House for 7 yrs.
His wife died at Lena 18 yrs ago, and he moved to Freeport and lived with his daughter, Mrs. Levi Putzel.
He was married in Carroll county to Charlotte Morton.
